By the Associated Press BALTIMORE, March 10.—One brief statement by counsel in Federal Court today will bring to a close the trial of two New Jersey firms charged with seven individuals of conspiring to con- vert into beverage channels cracked in- dustrial alcohol, and Judge William C. Coleman will place the case in the hands of the jury. Evidence was completed yesterday, with all of the arguments except the summation by Leslie R. Salter, special assistant attorney general. Trial of the case occupled two full weeks and more than 100 witnesses were called by the Government The two firms, the Agricultural Chemical Works and the Midwest Chemical Works, were accused by Gov- >rnment witnesses with shipping cracked alcohol as insecticides to several points about the country where agents had set up stills to turn the product into liquor. At the beginning of the trial there were 10 individuals, but the second day of the trial three received permission to change their pleas from not guilty to guilty. Judge Coleman was told they were unable to engage counsel due to financial reasons. The three were released under bond and will be sentenced at the conclusion of the litigation. All of the defendants in the present action were included in a large group indicted by the Federal grand jury last July. Another group is scheduled to go to trial at once, while the third ap- peared in court recently and entered pleas of nolo contendere. NAMED TO COURT POST By a Staff Correspondent of The Star.
