BY HOWARD W. BLAKESLEE. Assoclated Press Science Editor, NEW YORK, January 15.—A syl thetic chemical, named *1:2:5:6: diben- zanthracene”—a substance with a Te- markable “shape”—produces cancer in animals. This s announced today in the American Journal of Cancer as & dis- covery of three British physicians. The synthetic compound is another demonstration that the shape in which simple elements are put together—the arrangement of their atoms—sometimes determines their effect on man. Like Sketch of Worm. Harmless hydrogen and carbon— | nothing else—compose “1:2:5:6: diben- zanthracene.” But these carbon and hydrogen atoms are put together in five rings, having six sides each. These rings are joined so that they resemble | a crude sketch by a child of a short fat worm, having an overgrown head sticking up at one end, and a grotesque lump of a tail hanging at the other. The synthetic chemical is useful, says Dr. Francis Carter Wood of Columbia University, editor of the Journa), as an aid to find out more ab “The next step,” he find out whether any this compound, or the compound it- self, occur in the structures of the body where the cancer has originated.
