CLARKE BURIED IN PHILADELPHIA Descendant of Colonial Families Died at Her Residence Here Last Friday. Mrr. Isabel S. Clarke, widow of John F. Clarke, who died Friday at her home, 1625 Sixteenth street, was buried Mon- day in Westminster Cemetery, Phila- delphia, following services here Sunday. Mrs. Clarke was born in Predericks- burg, Va., a granddaughter of Robert R. Stair, a direct descendant of John, Earl of Stair, who owned land grants in New Jersey in 1683. Her grand- mother, Mrs. Clara Massey Stair of Berkley Parish, Spotsylvania County, Va., was a descendant of Peter Massey, who served in the House of Burgesses of Virginia in 1659 and later, and the Overtons, whose land grants in Rappa- hannock County, Va., dated 1663. She was a member of Gen. Dabney Maury Chapter, United Daughters of the Con- federacy. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Edwin Morrison, Paoli, Pa., and Ethyl Clarke of this city; two nephews, E. Hess, a re- tired officer of the Army Dental Corps, was received today at the War Depart- ment. Born in Columbus, Ind., December 11, 1870, Col. Hess was appoitned to the Army from the District of Columbia in June, 1901. His earliest service was as a contract surgeon and later was com- missioned as a dental surgeon in the Regular Army in 1916. He reached the grade of colonel in the following year, and was retired for disability in line of duty in July, 1924. - He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lilllan B. Hess, now in San Francisco, and a son, First Lieut. John B. Hess, 30th United States Infantry, also on duty in San Francisco. .
