Philadelphia Orchestra | Presents Modern Program. HEN a program of some- what similar proportions to the one presented last night by the Philadelphia Orchestra in Constitution Hall was played recently in New York, a prominent Manhattan critic said that this orchestra had “gone off the gold standard.” There were many last night in the nudience who must have thought and felt the same. Leopold Sto- kowski had chosen not just an averagely modern pro- gram, but an ultra - modern, an almost com- munisticaly modern one, which included the Lopatinkoff “Symphony No. 1,” Milhaud's “Concerto for Samuel Dushiin, _Ooncerio, foF Percussion,” the new Strawinsky “Concerto for Violin and Orchestra” and the Moussorgsky ‘“Pictures at an Exhibition,” arranged for or- chestra by Maurice Ravel. The evening, to put it mildly, was one of stress and strain. Mr. Sto- kow of course, gives his audi- ences what he thinks they should nd not by any means what y would like him to want them to have. Thus, after a program pre- sented earlier in the season of early classicists, he delves into the pres- ent with such a definite gesture of “Well, see what you think of this?” that it leaves judgment as well as the evening's pleasure a trifle doubt- ful The trouble with any perform- ance given by Stokowski and his Philadelphians is that, whether you like the program or not, it is all played so superbly that you are forced to marvel in the middle of your grief. Even during the pro- Joint Recital Given At University Women's Club, | OSE POLLIO JARMAN, mezz0- | contralto, and Octavia Marshall, | planist, gave a joint recital last eve- | ning in the club house of the Amer- ican Association of University ‘Women before & large and ap- preciative audi- ence. In all o Octavia Marshall, ‘hl:!&: Re ale: tion was good and her enunciation clear and distinct, adding much to the good phrasing and tone color of her singing. Mrs. Jarman sang & double encore at the close of the pro- gram and chose two spirituals from the collection of Betty Kendall, writ- ten and arranged by Mildred Kolb Schulze, “When de Stars Begin to Fall” and “I Yield.” Miss Marshall is a young artist, and plays with style and finish worthy of an older and more mature pianist. She has ample technic, and obtains a warm, singing tone which was par- ticularly beautiful in the Chopin “Nocturne.” Her second number was Dohanyi’s paraphrase of Delibes’ “Naila Waltz,” which she played with brilliance and dash, showing a fine sense of rhythm, with delicacy of finger work. Although she was recalled several times, she did not respond with an encore. K.B.
