An excerpt from the book reads: “At a convention of five lodge: sembled at the lodge room in Wil burg on the 23d June, 1777, decided that Virginia, which was then without & grand lodge organization or [the government of a grand master, should forthwith declare an election of grand officers, thereby establishing itself as an independent entity. “And in order to give dispatch this business, this convention beg leave Unearthed in the attic of an old Georgis house, & rare Masonic record ‘The tome, printed in ‘Washington. 1791 by John Dixon of Richmond, Va.. George Washington as & proper person to fill the office of grand master for the same, and to whom the charter of appointment aforementioned be mad “But should the lodges prefer any other person to this office, it is recom: I mended that the respective lodges d elect some other person and notif, ference was called to select the grand | master, it 1s recorded that Warner Lewis, past master of the Botetcourt lodge, was nominated, but refused the office, and then “John Blair, past mas- ter of Williamsburg lodge, ‘'Was no nated and unanimously elected—wh was pleased to accept the office.” Subsequently, at an election in Rich- | mond October 4, 1784, Edmund Ran- | dolph became deputy grand master of | virginia Lodge. In 1786 he succeeded | to the office of grand master and ap- pointed John Marshall his deputy grand master. “The New Ahiman Reson,” as this book was named, is described on its title page as “Containing the laws and constitutions of the Grand Lodge of Virginia, to which is added, “The His- tory of Masonry, from the Creation to the death of Queen Elizabeth. Also Il- Iustrations of “he Royal Art; and a Va- riety of Other Matter Relative to That Institution. Carefully Collated, From the Most Approved Authors, Ancient as Well as Modern.” ‘The author acknowledges himself to be “John K. Read, present deputy grand master of Virginia, and member of the Sublime Lodge of Perfection of Charlestoon, South Carolina.” Although the book has been un- noticed for many years, it has survived its 140 years of life without material damage to the clarity of the print or the paper. Certain page edges are par- tially gnawed away, perhaps by the pro- verbial bookworm. The original bind- ing somewhat dilapidated, remains. In the portions which dealt with contemporary matters the book is an index of various local conditions preva- lent at that time. In mentioning the | payment of certain charges, for ex- ample, in tho same sentence it is or- | dered that the “fee for which shall be ten pounds for the purpose of grand charity and other contingencies and | six dollars to the secretary for providing parchment and afixing seal.” The un- settled condition of post-revolutionary currency doubtless is reflected in the indiscriminate usage of “pounds and dollars.” The dominating influence of Randolph, Washington, Marshall and | Blair is suggested by their prominence |in affairs which concerned their own commonwealth. Among the acceptable excuses for ab- nce from a lodge meeting were “sick- s, lameness,” or being “upward of | three miles from the place of meeting.” i3 g It is estimated that even in normal prosperous times there are some 2,000, 000 people out of work in this country.
