The whole world’s mad.” “And you've just discovered it? T've known it for years. Father couldn’t come. He's paging Elise. Fine chance he has of finding her. What a moon! Has Journey's End converted you, Kit? Would you be willing to give up inde- pendence and your own little hole in the wall for—this? “No,” Cathleen said. “I'm beginning to understand you, Julia. Happiness isn't a place. It's a state. And each one of us must create our own state—so that we can keep cheats and sneaks outside our borG><." “Yes, and tickbirds. Do you know the tickbird? It's & mite of a thing that lives on the back of the hippo- thus in the jungle. It feeds off e ticks on the hippo's body.” “A vicarious living, isn't it?” “Rather. Elise is determined I shall marry Wallace Emmons. She wants to keep him in the family so that she'll always be able to put her hands on him. 8he knows I hate him. That makes it doubly safe for her. She's t father on her side. How, I don't ow. Sold him the Emmons name probably. There’s none better—if names mean’anything to you.” “Not a blessed thing. Except—Tom. I have a penchant for the name Tom.” “Tom is a good name. Nice and sub- stantial and two-fisted. 'ou won't consider Emmons’ lever! Em is despicable. He's re- pellent to me. He's that little tickbird I was telling you about. Father’s the hippo, insensate with power and wealth. Em thinks I'm a nice fat tick on father’s back and he'd like to peck at me. I refuse to be pecked.” “But there are tickbirds every- where——" My associates in business and the friends I've made there don't know about father. To them I am merely Julia Craig, a wage-earner. Cralg was mother’s maiden name. I'd like to do credit to it. I let you in on my secret, Kit, because I like you. And somehow I suspect you have a similar problem.” “I have,” Cathleen said. The need to to give Julia her confidence, to pour out her own troubles was so poignant that her tongue tripped in its haste. Only my problem seems so small be- side yours. Maybe you'll have a heart, Kit-Kit, and help me to take the weight off my feet. Jewel can tell you that I'm the lad who invented the tango.” “No tango, thank you,” Cathleen sald. “What? No tango? The great Caldwell had a way, in conversation, of excluding Elise from the circle of youth. It en- raged her more than anything he did. “Yes,” she said acidly. “And the old folks are sitting here heavily boring each other to extinction. ‘That would repay him.
