THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. €. MONDAY, NOVEM HOMES DECLARED |[ From the Front Row OBSOLETEIN U. . Hoover Committee to Consid- er Mass Production as Solution. By the Associated Press. Poor home owner! His pride and oy now appears to be a thing of horror, obsolete and discredited. This verdict has been pronounced on the bulk of the country's houses by a committee of President Hoover's Con- ference on Home Building and Home Ownership. The home, contends the committee, has not kept up to the advance in America’s standard of living. Automo- biles, radios and other modern blessings have outstripped the dwelling place. The cause of the home’s backsliding is found by the report to rest on too high cost _of building. “New houses meeting an acceptable standard of living are too expensive for two-thirds of the population of the United States.” it said. Many families must continue living in houses far below present-day standards of sanitation, because no way has been found of replacing the old ones at a cost as low as it was 20 or 50 years ago. The solution. the report holds, les in mass production of houses. It was turned in by Alfred K. Stern, director | of the Julius Rosenwald Pund, ‘as chair- man of the Committee of Large-Scale Reviews and News of Al Jolson at Belasco Presents “The Wonder Bar.” L JOLSON’S ability to hold an audience with entertainment that meets the test probably is even greater than that of the glorified spellbinder in a political campaign. Each word or motion or inflection is dramatized, polished and il- Jumined with the indefinable stuff of which high talent is made. His pres- ence is a signal for _sttention and preparation for laughter and applause. characteMstic expression is friendly and kindly and stim- ulating. He plays upon the emo- tions without trying in the least to do so, it appears, and only his first name lingers in the minds of his hearers. He is just “the great Al" No proof is required to impress the fact that Al is a singer and also an actor. He is also a judge of other entertainers, and, in the moments when_his services are not required, he offers some excellent specialties Al Jolson. Operations. In “The Wonder Bar,” which again was on view last evening at the Shubert-Belasto Theater, he made the audience a part of his setting as a fashioner of a good time in the theater. Late comers were greeted by the star himself, who ushered them to their seats and told them how glad he was to see them. At one time he stirred up some ap- plause for an absent figure of talent, when he announced that Irving Berlin was present, and then decided that he had made = mistake. But Berlin got the applause. The best of that form of recognition, how- ever, was reserved for Al himself. Probably Mr. Jolson has been privileged to sit in on the making of some of those motion pictures in which the manufactured applause sounds like a cloudburst in the jungle. That is one of the specialties of Hollywood. There was some of the same kind at the Belasco last evening, but it wasn't manufactured —it was a tribute to an artist in everything that gives magnetism to the stage. And at one time, when he sang one of the old songs insep- arable from his name, there were cheers for the actor and singer. The gathering would have kept him in action until morning if the union rules for Sunday evening had not brought the assemblage to a re- luctant close. ~Demands from the audience for the singing of various Jolson examples of melody and drama and pathos and humor were met by the star, who had previously announced that the “show must go on,” but he would supply the songs after the rest of the program had been given. It was all fine enter- tainment, and would be just as good if & refining process were employed in modifying some of the jokes. “The Wonder Bar” is described as “a Continental novelty” and is made unigue by the turning of the whole theater into a cabaret, in which the stage is only the center of principal action. It has plenty of music with a flavor of the foreign languages that might be found in a European cabaret, and abounds in professional dencing and the singing of some songs that ere favorites abroad. An athletic act by two brother per- formers is an_exhibition of strength rarely seen. Several expert dancers give distinction to the performance. The orchestra meets all the varying requirements, and without the slight- est_intention of reflecting on the numerous talented persons who pro- vide the entertainment, it should be emphasized_that the rough comedy of Patsy Kelly (feminine) and Al Segal is the product of some deli- cate conception of good acting. Other features are provided by Rita Montaner, Mangini Brothers and Chilton and Thomes. D.C.C. Burton Holmes, At National, Yesterday. RAMATIC PROOF of the extraordinary reliability OF THE FORD TRUCK IN A ROAD improvement project in the mountains of Kentucky, sand and gravel are taken from the river bed, and loaded into dump trucks. The trucks have to run in the river for some distance before reaching a 149, grade, up which they must pull, loaded, to the highway. When this work started there was but one Ford in the contractor’ s fleet. That performed in such an extraordinary manner that more were ordered, and today out of twelve trucks in this service, nine are Fords. One of them at the end of six months had a repair bill of only fifteen cents. Such conditions of service are mostunusual, and the fact that the Ford truck can stand them triumphantly, and win the preference of the operator, is significant to every truck owner, in the cities as well as in the country. Ford truck reliability and economy are due 1o typical Ford features of mechanical design. The four-speed transmission enables the driver to cope successfully with the most difficult road and load conditions. The fact that the entire drive in all forward speeds is carried on ball and roller bearings lessens friction and insures long life to the transmission. The spiral bevel gear rear axle, with straddle-mounted pinion, is unusually sturdy. The three-quarter floating FORD MOTOR COMPANY construction takes the weight off the drive shafts. These are but a few of the Ford features that give you “value far above the price.” There is a Ford truck for every business.
