By the Associated Press | HOLLYWOOD, Calif., November 4.— Death has ended the brilliant career of Robert Williams, noted young stage and screen ‘actor. He succumbed in & hos- pital last night o peritonitis, which set in after rupture of the appe: Two operations, one for the el of the appendix ‘and the other in an eflort to check the peritonitis, were per- formed, the second last Sunday night. Leaves Yonng Daughter. Willlars was the husband of Nina Penn, formerly a New York stage play- er. He had one daughter, Mary Ellen, 9. by a previous marriage to Marion Harrls, actress. Born on a farm near Morganton, N. C., September 15, 1898, Williams at the age of 11 ran away from home to join | a tent show. He remained with th tent show until it reached Jackson, M when he joined a_showboat on the Mississippi. At 14 Williams entered a Midwest stock company, which led him to Chi- cago and Pittsburgh and eventually New York. Lifted to Stardom. His first appearance in New York wa: with Marjorle Rambeau in “Eyes of Youth.” Other Broadway _successes which lifted him to stardom were “Able’s Irish Rose,” “The Tri Mary Du- gan” and “Rebound.” He had co- starred with Alice Erady, Ann Harding, | Hope Willilams and Elise Ferguson. | Williams came to Hollyv.ood six | months ago to appear in the stage pro duction, “Rebound,” and a long-time contract as feature player resulted.
