SAVINGS ACCOUNTS INCREASE IN D.C. Local Banks Report Gain of $1,317,000 Since June Controller’s Call. BY EDWARD C. STONE Thrifty Washington residents $120.218.000 tucked sway in the 39 Jocal banks on September 29, according 10 a sumimary of the Oapital banking situation just pub- tomary efter each bank call This large total in local savings is $1.317,000 Jarger than on deposit on 30, when of June ; the ag- gregate amount was _ $118.901,000. and 36,340,000 Jarger than on the call of September 24 ayear ago. when the total stood at $113,878,000 Bavings deposits in this city two calls back, or on March 25 of the present year, were $116.501,000. also a consid- erably lower figure than s shown by the tember returns The above figures are sufficient to rove that interest in piling up savings unabated In Washington, that so- called “hoarding” has been practically unknown here at sny time during the depression and that the thrift complex if it may be called that, is expanding steadily How Savings Are Divided. Detailed figures from the controller's abstract reveal that savings in the local of 12 national banks total 39,000, that thrift accounts in the 22 savi banks amount in the aggregate %0 $26,820,000, while the city's five trust had | ! In the time that ‘has _elapsed since the controller's call ©of September 24, it is safe to assume that total savings in Washington have now passed the $120,218,000 figure by & considerable sum. The number of accounts, as evidenced hy savi pass books, also reveals an increase between the last two calls and the corresponding call in September a Eu’ ago. There are now 235,379 sa gs accounts in the local banks. of these 110,052 are in the savings bank nts of the national banks, 1 in the savings banks and 75.516 he trust company savings depart- 650, How rapidly the of savings aceounts has grown recent months 1s perhaps best pic- wmu{lmmkmm March 25, 31, call, when there were 309,431 peo- in this city having such accounts. from that figure to 325,379 is cel y notable. The oft-heard assertion that people become cautious when. times are not 0 and hustle to pile up defense savings accounts is proved beyond a doubt so far as Wi is con- cerned. Building in Pifth District. Building permits issued by building in 32 cities in the fifth re- serve district In September totaled 2,852, with estimated valuation amount- ing to $6,046,542, a decrease of 3.9 per cent ' in number in comparison with 2,968 permits issued in September, 1930, but an increase of ,‘Ton mflr“I cent wo;:r September, 1930, valuat! 3 - ing $5,663,587, the Reserve l;nk ot Richmond reports. 5 Only 12 of the 32 cities re'gofl.ed higher figures for the 1931 month, but Washington showed an increase of nearly a million and a quarter dollars and several smaller cities reported rela- tively large increases. In proportion to population, the best records for the month were made by Clarksburg, W. Va., and Durham, N. C. Contracts awarded in September for construction work in the fifth district, lmmdln‘ both rural and urban projects, totaled §20,573.415, compared with only $12,548,085 in August, 1931, and $16.- 162,532 in September. 1930. Of the awards in September this year, $4,034.- 385, or only 19.6 per cent, was for res! dential work, while last year residential contracts in September totaled $6.496,- 947, or 40.2 per cent of all awards. D. C. Exchange More Active. More activity was displayed on the ‘Washington Stock Exchange today fol- Jowing yesterday's holiday. The opening sale was in Potomac Flectric Power 5'; per cent preferred stock which changed hands at 106%:. Both type stocks were out, Lanston Monotype selling at the recent price ‘of 75 and Mergenthaler Linotype in small Jots at 63, also unchanged from the last previous sale. Capital Traction stock appeared on the board today on a turnover of only 13 shares, selling at 24 flat, off % point from the last sale. ,_series B. came out at Traction 5s _moved at 71, and $500 ‘Washington Railway & Electric 4s were in demand at 86%. Young Banker Scores Triumph. Edwin C. Steffe of the Federal- ‘American National Bank & Trust Co. was showered with congratulations to- day for wu-mmg the finals in the Dis- trict of Columbia radio audition con- test. He will compete later in the month for a share of the $25,000 prize offered by the Atwater Kent Founda- tion. The young banker has a rich baritone voice and rare ability as a comedian. At the last convention of the District Bankers' .Association, at| Hot Springs, Va.. Steffe scored an out- | standing hit at the convention dinner. At the annual dinners of the Institute of Banking he has met with the same | Buccess as an entertainer, | Gleaned in Financial District. The annual meeting of the Washing- ton Stock "Exchange. which includes | the election of officers and annual re- | ports, takes place in about two weeks President Joshua Evans. ir. of the District National Bank. will be back at his desk probably before the end of the week. Local board rooms were well filled this morning following the opening of the New York Stock Exchange after yesterday's election day closing. Maryland’s prospective yield of 33.- 000,000 pounds of tobacco this year compares with 19,040,000 pounds grown in 1930 and a five-year average of 24.- 432,000 pounds. CLEARING HOUSE FIGURES. Wheat reacted after its recent sharp advance, and during the ecarly trading stocks representing corporations doing business with heavy. On the other hand, the ofl shares were very firm, reflecting the better outlook in that field, but even the oils made little or no progress. Leaders Sell Off. Leading industrials, such as American Can, Allled Chemical and Eastman Kodak, were off a point or two. Mila | pressure was exerted against American Telephone, and Western Union came down to within a point of its record !low. United States Steel held within the range of a point or a little more. although the Iron Age reported opera- | tions at 30 per cent capacity, against 29 per cent a week ago for the industry at large. A better showing was made by to- baccos, the food stocks, Westinghouse | Electric and a few specialties, among which McKeesport Tin Plate was prom- inent. Borden Co. was favored in the food list and Liggett & Myers among the tobaccos. Lorillard was actively bought for a time on the hope of divi- dend restoration, which expectation; however, was not officially encouraged. :In the motor list Auburn Auto was weak at the opening, but recovered par- tially afterward. Opening Is Firm. The market was firm at the opening. Trading was fairly active and the market had a firmer tone in continental exchanges to help it. Steel operations were reported higher. Standard Oil of California declared its regular dividend. United States Steel opened at 67% on_a 1500-share transaction, a point | higher on the day. Vanadium and other steel shares were firm. Active industrials | moved up by small amounts, the best gainers being J. I. Case, General Elec- tric, Westinghouse, Bordens and Sears- Roebuck. Rai'road shares were un- changed, except Canadian Pacific, which opened almost a point higher in spite of the refusal of the Canadian Raflway | Union to accept a 10 per cent wage re- duction. The oil stocks were mostly higher, though the advances were small. Stand- ard Oil of California was fractionally better at 347;. Standard Oil of New | Jersey at 35'4, gained a shade. Socony- | Vacuum, Shell Union and Royal Dutch also advanced, the latter despite the commission of its interim dividend. Utili- | ties were firm. ‘American Telephone | gained a point to 138':.
