Mosquitoes apparently don't like sea air. “The Public: Health Service has just reported s series of intensive inspec- tions at the port of New York of fast, modern ships arriving from Latin American ports, where there is @ pos- sibility of yellow fever. On only 1 of |11 vessels ‘arriving from Havana were mosquitoes found, apd ship = medical officers reported that almost invariably the crafts were free of these insects from 40 to 60 hours after sailing. None of the mosquitoes caught in New York were of the species Aedeg aegypti which, so far as known, is the ‘'only one which serves as a yellow fever carrier. Crews Teported that ships sometimes are quite :heavily infested on leaving port when the prevailing winds are right, but that they fly away of their own accord. ~If this fact is verified by further inspection it will facilitate Public Health Service efforts to safe- guard American ports from invasion by the yellow fever cartier, made pos- | sible by increased speed of transpo: tation.
