She ran very swiftly and was soon far ahead of Gridley, who was weighed down with clothes, heavy weapons and ammunition. He csiled after her, but she did not heed him and he continued doggedly along her trail, making the best time he could. He felt hurt and angry, but only because their sweet friendship had been blasted. Once in a while he caught a glimpse of her as she ecrossed a ridge shead of him. Yet he could not gain on her. Determined not to give up, he plodded on for hours. Would the girl never stop to rest? At last he saw her again as he topped a low crag. She stood upon the edge of a great precipice, looking for some means of descent, when she became aware of Jason's approach. She wheeled on him angrily. “Go back!” she cried, “or I shall jump!” “I cannot let you go away alone, Jana," sald Jason quietly. “The Red Flower of Zoram wants no pro- tection from such as you,” she replied haughtily. “We have been such good friends,” he pleaded, “let us go on as we have in the past. I cannot : help it if * he hesitated and stopped. “I do not i care that you co not love me,” she said. “I hate you beause your eyes have lied to me. Go your way.
