DANVILLE, Va, October 1.—Dan- ville warehousemen were called upon to close their warenouses in resolutions adopted yesterday at a mass meeting of tobacco growers at Chatham. Farmers were also urged to keep their tobacco in the barns. The resolution demanded that warehouses be closed from Octo- ber 6 until October 19 in the hope that the world financial situation might be- | come more stabilized by ihat time. Many of the almost 200 who at- tended the meeting were large land owners. The meeting was called by | growers following disappointment_over opening prices paid for tobacco. While morning estimates by warehousemen in- dicated an exceedingly low avera prices improved during the afternoon |and the day's average was $7.37 per 100 pounds. The South Boston market was also asked to close at the meeting yester- day and it was the sense of the meet- ing that co-ordinated action be taken by adjoining tobacco counties. The | meeting was without spectacular fea- tures and an air of seriousness pre- vailed. Few of the farmers present had any set plan ready to remedy the situ- ation, but a committee on resolutions was appointed which resulted in the re- quest to close the warehouses and urging farmers to kecp their tcbacco under barn roofs rather than to let it go for what was characterized ridicu- { lously low prices. Little tobacco was brought into Danville yesterday, most of the leaf on the floors having gone over from the opening day, when sales blocked. Prices were reported a shade higher yesterday. Another mass meeting of farmers will be held Tuesday, it was said by leaders, when & “‘more definite program | will be outitned.” POTATO MARXET.
