Public Utilities Bear Brunt of Selling—Specialties . Weak. BY JOHN A. CRONE. Special Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORK, September 29.—Stocks on the Curb Exchange quickened their pace on the downside today after a quict and slightly lower opening. Electric. Bond & Share met pressure | becanse of the showing made by Ameri- can & Foreign Power, its principal oper- ating subsidiary, though the earnings tement was no worse than had been expected. Citles Service was off about & half point before midday and other pivotal issues were under pressure. American & Foreign Power warrants were among the first of the utilities to head downward. The company's earning statement for the 12 months ended June 30, showed $6.28 earned on the second $7 preferred, against $2.72 a share on the common in the same pe- riod of 1930, reflecting the world-wide depression and the fluctuating foreign exchanges. This statement was at once mirrored in Electric Bond & Share $6 and $5 preferred, which broke 4 and 1%, points, respectively, on their opening. transac- ‘ions. American Superpower preferred, one of the first ‘utility holding com- panies ta appear, opened off 12 points. Neturally these incidents touched off some selling in utility preferred issues, resuiting in declines of a point or more in such‘stocks as Florida Power & Light, Long Island Lighting, and United Light Sien, Tows o 24% 1% 9 103% 5% Stock and . . TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1931 FUTURE OF SILVER 1% 44 Metal Dealers Believe, How- ever, That Trend Will Be Upward. % 9% Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, September 20.—A sharp difference of opinion exists here as to the outlook for silver and the possibility of its being used as a basis for money by countries that have de- serted the gold standard. Bankers, international, commercial 5 |and investment, believe ‘that Great Britain will return eventually to gold. 3 | Some go so far as to insist that most of the gold ear-marking here last week was for the account of the Bank of 1 | England, the gold purchases being made out of the proceeds of sales of British holdings of American securities here. Brokers’ Opinion. Many brokers, members of the Na- tional Metal Exchange and metal pro- | ducers, declared today they were willing to lay bets that silver over the next week will go higher before it will lower. International dealers in metals, however, are inc] to agree with Edgar Snow's summary of the silver situation, cabled yesterday from Shang- hai, point: out, however, that over the long period a gradual rise in silver prices is justified. Meanwhile the shares of silver mining compsnies on the various exchanges here have advanced and dealings in silver futures on the National Metal Exchange have reached record propor- tions t> the accompaniment of the higher guotations. “Basically, the flurry in silver,” re- 5y | marked an international broker, “is 21 21 Baltimore Markets Special Dispateh to The Star.
