The narrowing down of the squad of 50-odd players to 22 gives local college grid followers their first slant on Georgetown's 1931 eleven. For more than three weeks Mills has remained silent. King or Costello will handle the quar- terback job. Although ' the Lebanon Valley tilt| usually is no more than a Warm-up game for the Hoyas, they are not tak- ing the Pennsylvania collegians too | lightly. Injuries at the Rehoboth | Beach training camp have forced many of Georgetown's potential stalwarts to | miss drills, and whether Mills will be able to use Dahieu and Alenty is prob- lematical. Mack Stanley, a reserve | halfback; and Louis Dee, & guard can- | didate, also are out with injuries. Unable to get outdoors yesterday be- cause of the rain, the Hoya squad was herded into the gymnasium and the afternoon given to a blackboard talk. Good TROJANS COMBINE POWER AND SHIFT Deceptive Tandem Forma- tion May Mean Great Suc- cess for Jones’ Eleven. | By the Associated Press. O8 ANGELES, September 24— | Power plays, the University of | California’s chlef weapon of | assault on the foot ball field, will burst from a deceptive new tan- dem shift this Fall. And if the innovation works out as Coach Howard Harding Jones hopes it will, the mighty men of Troy may do something decisive in the way of cop- ing with a man’s size schedule. From the standpoint of material Southern California is well fixed, hav- ing 20 letter men, 7 of them regulars last year, and reserve assets no end. Even the reticent “headman,” al- ways reluctant about praising his men, admits his Trojans will be as good as last year, and he refers to his 1930 team at its best, which does not take into_consideration the Notre Dame and ‘Washington State defeats. ‘When the new shift was announced, Coach Jones said it would be shelved for another year if the team didn't take to it well, but with only two days before the opening test with sturdy St. Mary's it is still being used in practice. ‘The eleven comes out of the huddle in & jumbled mass, linemen in the rear rank, backs on the line, comes the shift, & full second halt, and then the ball is snapped. It may be a lateral pass, & long forward, a spinner, or a quick kick, but most likely it will be a power thrust through left guard, for this is Tray’s long suit. Orville Mohler, leading scorer of the ific Coast Conference, and Gaius Shaver, a fullback of two years experi- ence, will be the quarterbacks. Jimmy (Sweet) Musick, for two seasons first string player, will be sharing the full- back assignment with Erny Pickert, who was an all-American half last Fall. Ball carrying is confined almost entirely to these two positions under the Jones' system. ‘The schedule: . While the majority of mentors are per- fectly satisfied to find a triple threat among his backfield candidates, Miller is looking for a man with one more asset. ‘The back commonly known to the foot ball world as & triple threat is one who can kick, run or pass. This sophomore weighs 180 pounds and is a sprinter of ability and, according to Miller, is destined to be one of Navy's greatest all- around backs before he gradusates. EXPECTS CLEVER GRID TEAM Has Lost Some Good Players, but Confident Newcomers Will Fill All Gaps. In spite of the loss of 20 men from last year's Howard University foot ball squad, prospects Joom unusually bright for a winning team, as indicated by material reporting for preliminary practice. Losses to the squad include five letter men - by graduation, scholarship diffi- culties and the depression, but tI are offset by a wealth of new material. Included among last year's. varsit; men who have reported are Capt. Mar- shall, ex-Capt. Mack, Hall, Boswell, Jones and Ukkerd in the backfleld; , Cheyney and Peyton, ends, and Ellis -and Greenlee, linemen. Other members of last year's squad on hand include Holloman, Tibbs and Stewart. Among the new are Per- kins, all-Western Pennsylvania fullback, from McDonald High; Carrington of St. Louis; Jackson, Davis and Hough of Coatesville, Pa. Chandler, Jamaica High School, New York; Dunbar from Holsey Institute, Ga.; Hart, Kansas City; McGruder from Houston, Tex.; Thompson, Raleigh, N. C.; Andrews, Ithaca, N. Y.; " Settle, Crichlow and Cole from Wash- ington. ‘While Taylor, Smith and Shelton of last year’s varsity have not reported they have given assurance that they will be back. ‘The coaching staff includes Verdell, head coach, who came from North- western, with Young and Payne as backfield coaches and Harry Webb as line coach. John Harris of last year's team is trainer. "Do those bristles DATE CHANGE DUE T0 BOOST AFFAR Notable Gathering Expected October 15, When V. M. I. Offers Opposition. BY H. C. BYRD. Ouse honeymoon days are over and I've come back| to earth with a sort of a dull thud. Not that he isn’t good to me, because he really is. Iguess I couldn’t ask for a more kind and considerate partner. In fact he’s still a lover in every way but one. He'’s gotten careless about shaving. Probably he doesn’t reglize how much this means to me. But before we were married | never saw him without a tlean shave. He must have thought shaving was important then. I wonder if he feels that he can afford to neglect his beard now that he’s got me. I've hinted once or twice that he looks much sweeter with a clean shave, but he’s as careless as ever. Of course he shaves regularly, but not often enough or close enough. And I didn’t count on bristles when I married him. Well, I guess I have to be fair. He says that shaving is a nuisance and I suppose all razor blades are alike. Maybe I can get used to a slight growth of stubble, but I do wish my husband would -be as particular about shaving as he was when we were engaged.” You are right on one point, but wrong on the other. You must be fair and overlook your husband’s negligénce in the past because shaving was a more or less unpleasant task. But all razor blades aren’t alike. T ay Gillette has a splendid new blade that is decidedly different and better. It is almost certain to change any man’s idea about shaving. The new Gillette blade is guaranteed on a money- back basis. Men are invited to buy a package and try a blade or two at our risk.
