FIN CURB SHARES SINK ON SHARP SELLING Utility Stocks Continue Un- der Pressure—Most Losses Are Fractional. BY JOHN L. COOLEY, Associated Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, September 12.—Curb prices drifted lower today. Trading was dull but selling of utility stocks kept the list under pressure. Opening quotations were steady. How- ever, any hopes that the Friday rally would be extended on further short cov- ering quickly disappeared when pressure was directed against leading power and light issues. Electric Bond & Share duplicated its old low of 29° and closed | ANCIAL OVER 1,000 BANKS CLOSED DURING PRESENT YEAR Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. American Superpower, Utilities Power & Light and Middle West Utilities sagged moderately. Cities Service eased about balf a point. ‘The specialties were dull, although' Tower prices prevailed in most instances. | Aluminum of America reached new low ground for the current reaction and Glen Alden Coal weakened a couple of | points. A few late sales of Singer Manufacturing were recorded at 225, a loss of 15 points from Friday's close. Newmont Mining came within a frac- tion of its old minimum. Oils idled. Stancard of Kentucky was off 34 in light selling. BROMO-SELTZER DIVIDEND. At a recent meeting of the board of directors of Emerson Bromo Seltzer, Inc., the regular quarterly dividend of 50 cents a_share was declared on the preferred class “A” and class “B” com- mon_stock, payable to stockholders October 1. Vir- tually every town and even the little village now has electric service. Out- side a few municipal plants yet remain- ing, these are units of widespread sys- tems operated from a central station and eliminating by modern methods an army of employes. During the Summer modern steel tower transmission lines have been erected for the first time out through Kansas and into Oklahoma, adding to the efficiency of the plants. Companies each serving 200 to 500 towns and small centers have in the past three months reduced current charges 10 to 15 per cent. As a result the plains towns are obtaining current cheaper than ever before, and with the extensive customer ownership of stock, which covers tens of thousands of families, the sentiment | toward utilities has been stabilized on a mest friendly basis. P Paid last year—no NEW SOVIET AGENT TO PLAN INCREASE IN TRADE WITH U. S. (Continued From First Page.) fected with the same enterprise at a profit which is still considerable. The Soviet appears for a third time, but points out that inasmuch as the profits of the corporation “A" have been ab- normally large, the order would be given only at a reduction in prices, which is, as a rule, so marked, that the company, in order to do the busi- ness, would have to do so at & distinct loss. ‘The result is that corporation “A” can no longer afford to take the order, and its status is rendered worse be- cause it had in the meantime equipped itself to do a larger business which it can no longer carry on. The Soviet approaches corporation “B” and the process is repeated. It is evident that profits derived from dealing with the Soviets are, to a very large extent, ephemeral in character. Does it pay to sell one's conscience for a mess of | pottage, that is for the sake of a mon- entry gain? Russia is today the most widely ad- vertised place in the whole world. Newspapers and periodicals devote col- umn upon column to a discussiony of Russian affairs, ranging from the trial and conviction of women accused of having poisoned their husbands to the progress of the struggle against capital- ism and the capitalistic system, Lecture halls and classrooms, conven- tions and symposiums vie with one an- other in the marshaling of facts (sic) regarding the economic and financial and social structure of the erstwhile Romanoff Empire. Manufacturers and merchants continuously bemoan the fact that business with Russia would | increase immeasurably if the United States were to resume normal dealings | with her. But they do not seem to give suffi- cient thought to other parts of the world with which an infinitely larger business is carried on. Nor do they seem to fear the loss of such business which is already in existence. ‘There is something intriguing, some- thing fascinating about the things about which we know least. And while the capitalistic world drifts along aimlessly, Russia is planning slowly* and method- ically and systematically. She has a plan which capitalism has not. Rus- sia’s plan may be predicated upon per- verse economic dogmas, but it is a plan nevertheless,—a far more desirable state of affairs than no plan at all. Russia has issued to the proletariat of the world the clarion call to rally behind the Soviet flag and to fight with might and main the supposed exploit- ers of the masses. Critical times such as the present create a most fertile field for Russian propaganda—one of Russia’s staple, and it would seem in- exhaustible articles of export. In order to combat this propagan many of course deny its existence—it il n ry for what is generally referred Money to Loan AT e T Joupll Weller 420 Wash.
