i 2 FIN STOCK PRICES DROP AT SHORT SESSION Selling Quickens Toward| Close as Whole List Sags Under Pressure. BY CLAUDE A. JAGGER, P Assceiated Press Financial Editor. NEW YORK, September 12.—The stock market ended the week feebly to- day, showing no disposition to extend the rally which developed toward the close of yesterday's session. Trading was rather sluggish, for the time, but selling quickened in the last hour, and prices shrank rapidly. Issues influenced by dividend uncertainties were particularly feeble. The turnover was well below a million shares for the two-hour session, but losses of 1 to 4 points were numerous. ‘The market has managed to close a little higher, as measured by price ave- rages. only once this week, in fact only once in the past eight trading sessions. Some prive averages have already pene- trated the bear market bottom estab- lished on June 2, and the Standard St tistics-Associated Press weighted price | index of 90 representative issues came close to it today. Utilities Weak. ‘Westinghouse Electric was actively #old. declining about 4 points to the | lowest price since 1922. Directors meet for dividend action next week. Rails and utilities showed group weaknes: V. s. Steel was well supported for a time. but finally sank a couple of points. American Telephone dropped about | 8 points. going to the lowest price since June, but meeting support some- what above its June low. Western Elec- | tric’s deferred dividend meeting is echeduled for next week, and since American Telephone holds about 98 per | cent of its stock, adverse action would curtail American Telephone & Tele- graph's income. Allied Chemical and Delaware & Hudson ped about 5 points to the Jowest, prices since 1925 and 1923, re- spectively. The latter recovered a little in the final dealings. Reading and At- lantic Coast Line each dropped 3 points | to the lowest prices in several years. Miscellaneous issues losing about 2| to 4 points included American Can, Consolidated Gas. American Tcbacco B, | Case, Goodyear, Electric Power & Light, North American, New York Central, Atchison, Union Pacific. Coca-Cola. Eastman’ and a few others. Super- ANCIAL. SLIGHT DECLINE SHOWN IN, CHAIN STORE SALES According to a compilation issued by Merrill, Lynch & Co, 46 chain store companies, including three mail order concerns, show total sales for the first eight months of 1931 of $2,367,- 608,413, against sales of $2,468,901 2!2 |in the corresponding period of 1930, | decrease of 4.10 per cent. Three m order companies alone show sales mr the first eight months of 1931 of $369.- 863.947, against $416,054,631 in the nm eight months of 1930, a decrease 11.10 per cent. Excluding the mlll order concerns, 43 companies show sales for eight months of 1931 of $1.997.744,466, against sales of 846,631 in tho same period of 1930, a decrease of 2.68 per cent. Gold Stutement NEW YORK, September 12 (#).— The daily gold statément of the Fed- | eral Reserve Bank of New York today showed imports of $1,220,000 from Mex- ico. There were no exports and there was no net change in gold earmarked | for foreign account. heater was in soft, losing 4 points. General Electric ug ed about & point to another new low. dio and General Motors sagged only fractionally. Inter- national Business Machines, which | dropped several points yesterday, rallied | 5 points today. Reports from the Youngstown steel | area ‘indicate that the upturn in pro- | duction this week, followin the slump |over the Labor day holiday, will be | maintained at least thmlh the early part of next week. | The monthly copper statistics, show- ing a gain in refined stocks on hand of more than 15,000 short tons to A new | high record, amply explained the recent cut in the éxport price and further agi- | tation for curtailment of production. It |is expected that an international con- | ference of producers may be held next month. | The Texas Railroad Commission has modified its order under which resump- tion_of production in the East Texas | oil field was permitted, to restrict the opening of new wells.
