TWO FREED IN KILLING OF VIVIAN GORDON Stein and Greenberg Acquitted of Slaying Vice Witness After Four-Hour Debate. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, July 1.—The slaying of Vivian Gordon, vice witness, remals officially unsolved after & Bronx jury acquitted Harry Stein and Samuel Greenberg of her murder. The jury, after a trial of more than two weeks, deliberated 4 hours and 20 minutes. The two men were arrested April 8, more than a month after the body of Miss Gordon, alleged blackmailer d vice inquiry witness, was found stran- gled to death in Van Cortlandt Park. The.State's contention, based princi- pally on the testimony of Harry Schiit- ten, self-confessed driver of the auto- mobile in which the woman was slain, was that Steln and Greenberg had killed her because & man referred to in the trial merely as “Radelofl” de- sired her out of the way. THE EVENING STAR, WASfiINGTON, In his summation, 1. J. P, Alderman, assistant district attorney, declared “Radeloff” was John A. Radeloff, the slain woman's attorney, to whom she referred in her diary as “a man lhe feared.” Radeloff was arrested l.n:d the body was found, but hter u- Neither de!endlnt took the stand duriny trial, basf nu_‘i:y ""‘m Hion ing the defense e verdict was greeted with smiles by the two defendants, although S smile faded when he was le“g m‘:”" jail pending arrival of warrant from New York County, where he is wanted on a charge of robbery. Officials at the District Morgue were - |can be given a person for $50. Lying in the morgue is the body of George Oonk, 76 years old, retired art- ist, who died in Emergency Hospital Monday after being sent there from a residence in the 900 block of Virginia avenue southwest. Blind and without funds, Mr. Oonk is said to have resided at the Virginia talking with friends frequently men- tioned a studio he had in a distant city. A distant relative of Mr, Oonk is said to live in the 4700 block of Fifteenth street. The authorities at the Morgue communicated with this relative and afterward with some some distant rela- tives of the man in Detroit, who suc- ceeded in raising $50. Morgue officials have this amount of money on hand this morning, but were speculating as to what kind of burial they could give the aged artist for this sum or whether to wait a while longer in hopes that distant relatives or friends of the man could contribute more. ‘The steps of New York's Public Li- brlry on Fifth Avenue, which for years have been the meeting place of pic- turesque groups of students, writers, artists and an infinite variety'of oth- ers, have been barred to its habitues, FOR LOB’ kuue 349 Maryland uve. s.w.
