" BODYHEAT MAKES AIR “DEPRESSING” Proper Ventilation Found to Require More Than Pure Atmosphere. Heat stagnation within the body rather than the chemical condition of the air produces the sympioms silsin€ from the so-called vitiated atmosphere of the crowded room. says C. V. P. Young. Fresh air need not be cold to be beneficial, he declares in the following article BY PROF. C. V. P. YOUNG. Mead of the Department of Phy tion, Cornell Univers (Copyright, 1931, by the Associated Press.) ITHACA, N. Y., July 1.—Proper ven- tilation is as much dependent upon cer- tain changes inside the body, as upcn pure air—and in some instances even pure air alone is insufficient. Some years ago an interesting experi- ment was tried to determine the effects of breathing vifiated air. A group of students were placed in an inclosed glass cabinet. and were kept there for variable periods up to four hours, re- breathing the same air until the amount of carbon dioxide exceeded by 10 to 15 times that found in a crowded and poorly ventilated room. Strange to relate, it was found that, in spite of the greatly lessened oxygen content and the excessive amount of carbon dloxide, no symptoms of illness developed to long @s measures were taken to keep the temperature and the moisture reasonably low. Cause of Depression. Very different were the results, how- ever, when the temperature and moist- ure content were allowed to increase normally with the continued breathing. The stugents at once began to show depression, headache, dizziness and & tendency to nausea. relief when, without changing the con- ditions within the cabinet, they were allowed to breathe through a tube the fresh outside air, nor did this impure internal air produce any symptcms of discomfort when breathed through a tube by persons outside the cabinet. They received no | Evanston Peeper ] { Turns Out to Be i Latighing Parrot By ibe Associated Press. | ! ! than “Whistiing Jerry.” I Dozens of Evansionians called the police to complain that & “Peeping Tom” was abroad. As a result of this very careful and detailed serles of experiments, it was clearly demonstrated that the symp- toms arising from the so-called vitiated atmosphere of a crowded room are the result of heat stagnation within the body, rather than the chemical condi- tion of the air. If a normal heat interchange can be maintainod between the body and the air, the symptoms which are commonly attributed to poor ventilation do not develop, so that the ventilating problem becomes a problem primarly of regu- lating the temperature, the moisture or humidity and the motion of the air. Sleeping Room Temperature. ‘Temperature of a sleeping room in the case of children, especially infants, and very old people, should not be allowed to go_much below 60 degrees Fehrenheit. With the youth or adult in norma! health the minimum should b> about 50 degrees. Fresh air need not be cold to be beneficial, and mothers are often under the impression that children will become hardier and main- tain_ better health if they are required to sleep in bed rooms which are very cold. Furthermore, even with normal adults it is, to my mind, a mistaken idea that the open window should prevail, how- ever low the temperature may go or Whatever may be the velocity of the wind. Not only is it desirable to protect the recumbent body from drafts, but we know that quick changes in temper- ture are a tremendous strain upon the heat-regulating mechanism of the body and are often detrimental to the health, while the attempt to dress in that same cold room may very easily result in a decided chill. Individuals of robust physical health may with impunity sleep and dress in a very cold room, and even take a shower on a very coid day, but all persons cannot endure it with the same im- punity when they are fatigued or for any reason below normal. The body will become inured to almost any de- gree of exposure by practice and train- ing, but if extreme it is very apt to be at the expense of vitality, and it is no assurance of later health and longevity. Limits to Outdoor Sleeping. The rule, therefore, of the open-win- dow habit. and even more cf the out- door sleeping habit, during very severe weather canno: be applied to all per- sons. nor should it be applied neces- sarily in the case of the same individual 1 times. o | Tt should be remembered finally that Recently there died in this laboratory the last of the rats which ate the stufl {and all of which thrived upon it. They all died of old age. That means the novel food seemed completely good for them. The last one was two and a half, & ripe old age for & rat. One- fifth of his food was this wrapper m: terial. He ate a volumg about equiva lent to a well packed bushel basket full, and it weighed six pounds. The rat weighed one pound. The wrapping material was bought from scraps at the factory. Its only preparation was washing in water 10 remove the glycerin, which is a harm- less food. That, says Dr. McCay, is likewise all the preparation anticipated as necessary for the human feeding. Just put the cigar wrapper under the water tap for a moment, and it is ready to eat. Whether it is good to eat only the experiments will determine, but the effect upon rats is a fairly reliable in- dex, because among animals their | metabolism is closest to that cf human | beings. | Made of Cellulose. | Present roughages for human con- sumption, Dr. McCay says, have occa- | sional unfavorable effects upon diet, | even though they may be fine for the majority of persons. The cigar wrap- ping material is nct really a far cry from the most ordinary foodstuffs. It is | made of cellulose, one of the principal | compounds produced by plants and | trees. In Germany cellulose is used successt fully in laboratories to be converted ’synth!ucn.lly 4nto a fairly sweet sugar. Commercially it has been made intd | food for animals in that country. It is | the basis of artificial silks in this coun- try, and of many other commercial products, so numerous that chemists have coined the phrase “the cellulose age.” ¢ 18 DIE IN MEXICAN RAID ]TI‘OOPl Sent to Village Sacked in Land Dispute Foray.
