TRADE RECOVERING IN SOUTH AMERICA Brazil and Argentina Have Uoward Trend—Exports of U. S. Decrease. B the Associatedfress. L Definite improvement in business conditions in & number of South Amer- fcan countries has been noted by Amer- ican trade officials. The Department of Ccmmerce said yesterday, in its weekly review, that a slight but percepti’/e upward trend was reported from Brazil and Argentina, with fairly good business in Porto Rico. Exchange Rises Noted. The improvement in Brazil and Ar- gentina was credited largely to improve- ment in exchange. Department repre- sentatives in Brazil reported that do- mestic industries have been the chief beneficiaries of the improvement, but that during July resumption of buying imported merchandise to replenish de- pleted stocks may be expected. . The Argentine improvement was eredited both to better peso exchange and higher grain prices. The crop out- look was reported as favorable. Dull- ness continued in mining activities. Central America Dull. Porto Rican business was reported fairly good, with the statement, how- ever, that the Summer dullness is ex- z'scted to be accentuated by reduced come due to low prices of sugar. i Prom Trinidad came reports that better prices for cacao and a good sugar crop had strengthened the out- look. Slight gains were reported from Jamaica, with banana exports rising Further depression, the department said, seemed to be the rule in Central | America. Raw Silk Prices Up. The general Asiatic ione appeared | tmproved by increases in raw silk prices | and strengthening of cotton yarn and | textile markets, but heavy unemploy- | ment continues. ; Optimism was noted in China, but activities had not vet increased. MARINE BRIGADE TO GET OFFICERS FROM RANKS Promotions to Fill Vacancies, of Which 48 Exist, Announced by Col. Staleyr Although the 6th Marine Brigade, District of Columbia Marine Corps Re- serve Troops, will show a shortage of 48 officers, Lieut. Col. J. J. Staley, com- manding, anncunced today that vacan- cles will be filled by promotions from the enlisted ranks. The outfit goes into annual training camp at Virginia Beach, Va.. August 22 to September 6. Eleven of the 38 line officers of the Brigade were commissioned from the ranks cf the 20th Marines during the first year of th>t regiment's existence. | Col. Staley explained that promotion from the ranks is the brigade's policy. Officers of the brigade, formerly en- listed men, are: Capt. Frank L. Ach, Lieuts. Martin D. Delaney, James M. O'Leary, Justin A. Shook, Donald R. Hylend. Cromwell ‘Warner, Peter W. Hazes, Willam E. Combs, Archibald C. Slaymaker and ‘Warren W. Whitside. Poland, July 1 (#).—A bust of President Hoover is being placed at the ‘entrance to the park in which A monument to the late Woodrow Wil- son, war-time President of America, will be unveiled Saturday. ‘The Wilson statue has been mounted on a granite pedestal under direction of its sculptor, Gutzom Borglum. A map of Poland has been engraved on the pedestal in such a manner that the hand of the figure points thereto. Reductions ranging from 10 to 20 per cent in airplane passenger rates be- tween the National Capital and the Pa- cific Coast went into effect today.
