C, colored’ man, was sentenced to 20 years in the State penitentiary Saturday for theft by Judge Frederick W. Coleman, sitting in a special term of Corporation Court. Best was Indicted on four counts, charging housebreaking. In pronouncing sentence Judge Coleman said: “Under the law the maximum_penalty is 40 years, but I'm a 50-50 man, I believe in giving every one a fair chance. I'll cut the penalty in half.” Following the robberies, Best, who was pursued by police, took refuge in a residence and was captured 18 hours later. He reached Fredericksburg from Washington in a car he stole in the the Capital City.
