FIN CURB SHARES OFF INDRAGEY TRADING Utilities and Oils Feel Effects of Profit-Taking—Losses Light. BY JOHN A. CRONE. 8pecial Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORK, June 29.—Profit-taking. which started with the opening gong, caused prices on the Curb Exchange to turn downward today. Public utili- ties and petroleums, two of the most active groups last week, were first to feel the effects of realizing cperations | . today. Electric Bond & &hare sased more than a point by midday. Cities Serv- fce was off fractionally, as were Stand- | ard Oil of Indlana, Vacuum Oil and Plymouth Oil. American Gas & Elec- tric, American Light & Traction, United Light & Power A and American Superpower first softened in the utility | division. A few inactive issues early stood cut because of their unusual movements. Safety Car Heating & Light:ng, which | has not appeared in some time, cpened off 16 ponts. Singer Manufacturing was up about 9 points. Pepperell Manufacturing, which recently reduced its dividend from $8 to $6 & year, was unusually active and at times slightly higher. Socony-Vacuum when-issued _stock made its bow on the Curb Exchange at 18 today, or at the then approxi- mate price of Standard Oil of New York. Suspension_of _trading Petroleum Corporation General issued in when stock. unofficially announced Saturday, | was made effective today with the ad- | mission to trading of Socony-Vacuum Corporation, the new name of the merged concern. The Curb Clearing House Committee therefore directed that all clearing house balance orders dated June 1. iast. be cancelled and members having such debit balances ;ul Jecelve checks for them on Tues- ay. Comparative dullness and easiness of the international issues, unlike any session last week, was a feature of forenoon trading. Low priced coppers. such as United Verde, up 1':, were an outstanding strong spot. Markets at a Glance NEW YORK, June 29 (#).—Stocks weak; pivotal shares lose 2 to 5 points. New York, for the Asso- clated Press: #in Weekly News Review. Prompted by President Hoover's debt moratorium and . the ‘xroblble success of the negotiations with France, se- curity markets continued their sweep- ing advance, the price index of 90 rep- resentative stocks rising to 1219, an increase of 5.9 points. e bond mar- gations, especially German, leading the way. The general rise of commodity | prices, the belief that railroads will be i granted an increase in freight rates | and the marking up in wholesale cigar- | ette prices were added factors in the gain in market value of the stocks affected thereby. Due to the strong buying, the price of copper was marked up three times from cénts to 8% cents a pound. s Participation of rallroad stocks in the general advance was notable, in view of the fallure of such shares to join the upward movement early in the year. Current rumors regarding the freight rate increase have been numerous, the most consistent being that the com- mission will not allow the increase asked for, but that some elevation will be granted to alleviate the emergency situation. Revenue freight car loadings were disappoining, going sgainst upward trend customary at this season. For } the week ended June 13 loadings were lnbcrul. 21 per cent below a year ago at 732,453 cars, the lowest level recorded since the compilation of figures in 1918. It is‘'generally believed that very little improvement can be looked for until the fall seasonal expansion. With the exception of a few com- g!nles introducing new lines, automo- fle production again declined. The major portion of the reduction was re- ported by Ford, whose output receded about 13.1 per cent, while the indus- try as a whole was off 6.8 per cent. Steel operations continued on their downward path, ingot rodlil:tlon drop- ping to 35 per cent of caphcity, a de- cline of about 3 per cent from the pre- vious week and 4 per cent below two weeks ago., No immediate relief is in view, but it is expected that the debt holiday may hasten and accentuate the Autumn improvement. ‘The daily average of crude oil pro- duction rose 19,250 barrels, and al- though almost all districts showed .a decrease, East Texas produced 42350 barrels more than the previous week, too great a sum for the others to ab- sorb. Gasoline stocks declined 3.3 per cent to the lowest reserve since Jan- uary of this year. Although actual electric production was lower than last week, the decline was slightly less than is usual at this season, the total being off 4.6, with the central industrial area registering the greatest reduction. DIVIDEND POLICIES, NEW YORK, June 29 (Special).— Taking their cus from the regular dec- larations last week by Westinghouse, Northern Pacific and Baltimore & Ohio, and the intimation of the president of the Pennsylvania Railroad that a larger cut in the rate might have been considered if the international situa- tion had mnot changed, directors of other corporations that have been di- vided on their next dividend payment re disposed to take a more generous attitude, believing that earnings are at their lowest and that there will be a turn for the better in the second half of the year. Last week there were nearly 40 dividends reduced and about 50 omitted. There are no more im- portant dividend meetings scheduled until those of the iron and steel com- panies in the latter part of July. NEW YORK, June 29 —Following last week's extremely active trading, the cotton market quieted down today and set back about 30 points, ending 24 to 34 points lower than on Sat- urday. There was less urgent trade buying and recent short covering had reduced the outstanding interest materially. Trade buying and hot dry weather in the cotton belt steadled the market on the decline. June 20.—An increase of a quarter of a cent in the price of export, copper today brought the quota- tion to 9.275 cents a pound, c. i f. European base ports, and marked the fourth increase of a quarter of a cent in the foreign price in a week. | Meanwhile, Wall Street reports said that agreement finally has been reached whereby American production of cop- per will be further curtailed, with the possibility that the movement may take on international proportions. The reduction 1s expected to take the form of cessation of operations at some mines and drastic reduction in the rate of operations at others, in line with moves recently made by some of the higher-cost producing units in the West. Indications that the proposal ma extend to a further curtailment of for- eign production, especially in South | Africa, were seen in the report that - | Camille Gutt, one of the managing di- rectors of the Union Miniere du Haut Katanga, had co-operated in the new plan. M. Gutt and M. Fernand Pisart recently visited the United States on what at the time was stated their reg- ular semi-annual trip. At that time there were reports of conferences be- tween the large American producers, African producers and bankers, and, despite the lack of officlal confirmation, several mines were closed immediately after the close of the conferences. | Export demand for copper has con- tinued in heavy volume as a result of the improved European outlook follow- | ing President Hoover's debt holiday pro- posal. Sales for export on a few occa- | zlm‘\s have exceeded 17,000,000 pounds aily. | An advance of a quarter of a cent a | pound in the price of bare copper wire | to 109, cents in carload lots was an- | nounced today by General Cable Cor- poration. | securea m L.
