AT BANNED DRY BUREAU T0 CHANGE ITS NAME Division of Research to Be Used by Woodcock for Press Releases. Banned by Congress, the “division of research and public information of the Bureau of Prohibition” merely will change its name on July 1, the begin- ning of the new fiscal year, and do & different kind of work, in collecting and spreading dry information. This was disclosed by Prohibition Di- rector Woodcock, who has sent a cir- cular to all prohibition administrators, saying it will shift its output from printed pamphlets to “formal press Teleases for the director’s use on such topics and at such times as may be deemed necessary.” The new name of the organization will be the “Division of Research.” Woodcock said the renamed division would study particularly the “origin, quantity and direction of the illegal (liquor) traffic” and, in short, en- deavor to obtain “information of enemy operations.” During the last sesslon of Congress Representative La Guardia, Republican, New York, made a point of order against the proposed $50,000 authoriza- tion for “collecting and disseminating information and appeal for law ob- servance and law enforcement.” ‘Thus, although nothing was sub- tracted from the Prohibition Bureau's appropriation of $11,339,500, no au- thority was given for the work in question. Merrick, jr., civil engineer in the United States Ergineers Office, who is assisting Maj. Arthur in this work, ex- plained today that the contractor, the Portland Engineering Co. of Portiand, Me., expects to bring the craft above the ‘waters of the Potomac River today. The contractor sank two schooners— the Oatley C. Curtis and the B. S. Tay- Jor—one on eitker side of the Katahdin and has been engaged for the past few days in pumping out the water from these craft, chains having been passed under the derelict and attached by divers to_the two schooners.
