TOSCANINI FACES DISCIPLINARY MOVE ftaly May Suspend Passport | for Refusing to Play Fascist Song. By the Associated Press. ROME, May 21.—It was said on good authority here today that Arturo Tos- canini, conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, possibly may be subjected to som: “discipline” for refusing to play the Fascist n2tional anthem at Bolclnl last Thursday. This is expected in circles close to official quarters to take the fcrm of & tem suspension of his passport as a sign of the government’s disp- proval of his action. Slapped by Fascists. ‘Tcscanini, after his refusal to play the anthem n a concert, was set upon and slapped by several Fascists and later was asked to leave Bologna. He now is at his home in Milan. If the predicted action is taken against him, it was said his passport ll.kely would be restored soon and that he would be free to leave Italy when he whhes The Fascist version of the incident is | Miss that Toscanini, an Italian himself, knew he probably would be requested to play the national hymn as a curtesy to two the members of the cabinet. ‘When he refused, it was suggested that his concert master direct the air or that a military band play it defore Toscani- ni's arrival. This, the Isew York con- Guctor also refused, although he was told he needn't bs present when the enthem was rendered. Regarded as Discourteous. Tascists were described as regarding | = 1his as discourteous and bad form. They have deplored the violence of their fol- Jowers toward Toscanini, but excuse it as s “natural outburst.” Instead of being ordered to leave Bo- Jogna, it was said Toscanini merely was “advised” to leave to avold further | trouble.
