COOLEY, Associated Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, May 9 ().—The Fri- day rally followed through for a s~ant | half hour in the stock market today. Prices then became reactionary and closed with small but general net | losses in & turnover of 1.200,000 shares. Share quotations moved upward in & business-like manner et the opening. Initial quotations on United States Steel, America Can and American Tele- | phone represented overnight advances | of & point and a few larger gains an- peared elsewhere. But the reservoir 5% buying orders ran dry before the session was very old and the market slipped. It fluttered upward again in active trading, only to slump definitely when pronounced weakness developed | in_two industrisls. These fssues, J. I. Case and Johns- Manville, were sold heavilv, specially the former, which broke lnu points to 68%.. the lowest since 1926, Johns- Manville, whose first quarter earninas | amounted to 13 cents a share on the eommon stock. dipped more than 3 to a new low. The market evidentlv was considering the possibility of dividend reductions on both issues. although selling of a special nature was said to have been a factor in Case's decline. Steels weakened toward the close in | expectation that the United States| Steel Corporation’s backlog had been reduced rather sharply in April. The Department of Commerce' Reviews Conditions for Pe- riod Ending May 2. By the Associated P An unimproved business situation is reported by the Department of Com- merce in its weskly summary of con- | ditions at home and abroad, covering { the period ending May 2. Time money rates con- tinued the decrease. which started dur- ing the previous week. but were far be- | lcw the rates prevalent during the cor- responding week Jast year. Price Drop Continues. Average prices of representative stocks continued the decline which started during the closing week of March, | reaching the Inwest point so far this | year. Bond prices declined from the | week previous, equaling the low average | price set during the opening week of January. but remaining on a slightly higher ‘level than during the corre- | sponding week last year. Number of | business failures, as reported by R. G. figures, publithed at noon. showed & | pun & Co.. decreassd from the pre- decrease of 97,601 tons, or virtually the | yious week, but were above the level of maximum mentioned in estimates. Radio was| also supported temporarily. Gold Dust lost 3 points. In explanaticn of the de- cline it was said the low price of butter, as well s stricter regulation of oleo- margarine selling by several States, might have affected the company's business. — e FIGURES IN DETAIL ON DIVIDEND CHANGES Dividend changes in April totaled 223 Muead and passed dividends num- 139, while stock dividends ac- wunufl for 26 more, Extras were paid by 42 companies and initials by 10.
