NEW BATTLESHIP NAMED FLAGSHIP U. S. S. Pennsylvania, Lately Modernized, to Replace U. S. S. Texas. The new flagship of the United States; Fleet will be the U. S. S. Pennsylvania and not, as previously arranged, the| V. 8. S. Chicago. The anncuncement, | made yesterday at the Navy Depart- ment, said that Admiral Willlam V.| Pratt, chief of naval operations, direct- ed the newly modernized battleship Pennsylvania to replace the U. S. S Texas as flagship about September 15, when Admiral Frank H. Schofield takes over duties as commander in chief of the fleet from Admiral Jehu V. Chase. As modernized, the Pennsylvania pos- gesses & more compact arrangement of | her upper decks, her two macts being of the new tripod type. Her turret guns will elevate to greater angles at! target practice, certain cf her broadside ; guns have been raised and she is now equipped with 5-inch air defense bat- | tery. Additional protective armor has | been placed aboard to meet aircraft at- tacks, and “blisters,” to increase de- fense against torpedoes or underwater bomb damage, installed. Is One of Latest. | Her power plant has been renovated with installation of new main and cruising turbines. Modern fire control apparatus has been made part of her equipment, and this craft, launched in March, 1915, is one of the latest of Uncle Sam'’s fighting craft. The U. S. S. Chicago, previously designated as flagship of the United States Fleet, will now join the Cruiser Divisions, Scouting Force, on the East | Caoast, after completion of her final! trials in July. Gradually all of the smaller 6-inch gun cruisers will be transferred from ‘the Scouting Force to ths Battle Force, under the department's policy.
