INSANE CONVICTS STRANGLE GUARD Negro Escapes as White Man Is Caught Climbing Out Window. By the Associated Press. LIMA, Ohio, May 1.—Two insane con- wicts of the Lima Hospital for the Crim- inal Insane attacked and strangled to death Louis Kiehl, 48, a guard, early | oday. One of the convicts, Samuel Nelson, 19, a Negro, eluded the guards and escaped, but the other, John Powell, 24, white, of Columbus, was captured as he sttempted to leave the institution. ‘According to other guards, the insane isoners seized Guard Kiehl while he !’ll making his rounds of their ward and forced him into a lavatory, where they strangled him to death with their Henrlng the commotion, other guards rushed into the ward room and saw Powell attempting to get through a win- dow. They succeeded in dragging him back into the room, but Nelson had dis- appeared when they reached the hos- pital grounds. Nelson was sentenced to the Mans- fleld Reformatory from _Cuyahoga County to serve a sentence of from 1 to 20 years for auto theft. Powell was re- moved from the reformatory to the in- sane hospital in October of last year. He had been serving a 10-to-25-year sentence for robbery. Dr. W. H. Vorbau, superintendent of the hospital, who immediately started an Investigation and search for: the missing prisoner, said overcrowded con- ditions were responsibls for the killing. He said that the ward in which the men were connned was built for only 35 risoners, while at present 40 men are F\eld there. He declared huuslnx con- dltlons at the institution were “impossi~ ble.
