| BALL PLAYER HELD. IN WOMAN ATTACK South Bend Affair Ends Here With Sweetheart Beaten and Man in Hospital. Accused of severely beating his fer- mer sweethaart after following her from South Bend, Ind., to Washington, John L. Thompson, 25 years old, who said he- is a professional ball player of the Mississippi Valley League, was brought into Police Court today for assault. Thompson complained to Judge Ralph Given that he was ill and the magis- trate ordered the trial postponed for a week while Thompson receives medical treatment in Gallinger Hospital. He pleaded guilty. Miss Marjorie Ringle, 23 years old, 3621 Newark street, was found semi- conscious in a taxicab on Eighteenth street near New York avenue last night. Thompron, who police said was ob- viously drunk, was standing on a near- by curb cursing. Miss Ringle was taken to Emergency Hospital, where she was reported to be guffering from an ankle injury and a number of bruises on the face and upper body. Thempson was arrested by Policeman R. B. Rector of the third precinct. The girl told police that she “went with” Thompson for several years in her home town of South Bend and finally, growing tired of = the young man's’ persistent attentions, came_to Washington to get away from him. She eaid that he followed her and since her arrival here had annoyed her several times. Last night, she said, he attacked her for no apparent reason. She strug- gled and in an effort to get away from her assoilant slipped and fell to the street, injuring an ankle, A taxi driver came to her assistance and loaded her into his cab as police arrived. N GAS OVERCOMES THREE WHEN BOY OPENS JET Colored Parents Rescue Children From Deaths Upon Return From Movie. Three children today were recovering from the effects of illuminating gas, by ‘ which they were overcome last night after one of them had playfully turned on the jet in their bed room. Their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Collins, colored, had tucked them in bed at their home, at 106 Tenth street south- east, and gone to a neighborhood movie. A few minutes later the oldest young- ster, Thomas, ir., 4, crept from the bed, climbed upon a chair and began turn- | ing the wall jet off and on. | The pastime soon bored him, how- ever, and he returned to bed, leaving the jet turned on. | When the Collins’ returned they no- | ticed the odor of gas and traced it to| the children's bed room. There they found Thomas and his two brothers— Francis, 3, and Earl, 2—in a semi-con- scious condition, Collins summoned the rescue squad. | and with the aid of a Casualty Hospital | physician the youngsters were revived.
