C., SATURDAY, U. S. TAKES HAND IN CHECK SCHEME Report Says Man* Held Intended to Flood Country With Worth- less Paper. An alleged scheme to “fiood the country with worthless checks” i8 being Investigated by Federal authorities, fol- lowing the arrest of Willlam R. Thorne, 29 years old. Thorne, whose home is in Rocky Mount, N. C., was arrested yesterday, after placing an order for 500 checks with a printer at 809 Ninth street. The printer’s suspicions were aroused when Thorne identified himself as a representative of the Electric Bond & Bhare Co. of New York and ordered the cencern’s name printed on the checks. Summoned by the printer, Detectives B. W. Thompson, Clarence Talley and Eugene_Davis placed Thorne under ar- rest. Under questioning, Thorne is said to have declared he had decided to “make a clean-up by flooding the coun- try with worthless checks.” ‘Thorne, who said his father, T. T. Thorne, is a prominent Rocky Mount attorney, was penniless. The detectives bought him a dinner when he said he had not eaten for 24 hours. According to detectives, Thorne ad- mitted he had recently been released from the Willlamsport, Pa., jail, where he served 60 days for passing & bogus check. He is sald to have confessed similar activities in other parts of the country. Al present, he is said to have admitted, he is at liberty on $1,500 bond, posted by his father, for violation of the Dyer automobile act. The charge was placed against him in Norfolk, he added. Representatives of & private det-- tive agency informed Thompson, Tallev and Davis that Thorne is wanted for passing bad checks in several other perts of the country It was this information which caused Federal authorities to take a hand in the investigation of Thorne's activities. B8y Percival Christopher Wrem, Author of “Beau Geste” @Oopyright by Prederick A. Biokes @o.¥ CHAPTER XXXI. WAYE'S HOPE DEFERRED, HE thief? Had he returned in search of further loot, to see whether his victim were dead or not, to re- cover something ineriminating that he had dropped? Or had he perhapt seen men kneel- ing by the body, and, fearing that I had seen sufficient of him to be able to MP?NU him, had returned to silence me? Might he have turned abcut and followed me with a view to robbing me as he had robbed this unfortunate old man? Very improbable, as I (‘Prhlnli aid not look like a person who might be werth robbin, ressed as I was for the part that I was playing. These thoughts flashed through my mind as I rose to my feet to face—a policeman—who, club in hand, stood | menacingly glaring, his other hand rest. ing on the pistol that protruded from its opened holster. “Put 'em up,” he growled, “and . . I put one up like Nghtning, straight from my bip to the point of the jaw, and even as the tremendous blow went home, I realized that in my sudden | wrath, I had committed the most foolish | act of my life. No judge would believe my story that the policeman had struck me first, struck me down without a word. Nor, even if the policeman had ad- mitted it, would he have been severely | blamed for adopting that method of | arresting what he supposed to be a murderous highway robber, caught in | the very act of examining with wet, bloodstained hands the purse he had 80 _violently and brutally stolen. No. 1 had made an awkward position into one just about as dangerous as it could be. Had I meekly accepted the situation. I might ssibly have been able to prove that I was not the thief | and murderer, or, falling that, I might perhaps have been given the benefit of the doubt—at any rate, to the extent of a lighter sentence. But in the most unfortunate and suspicious circumstances in the world I had acted in the worst possible way— by my own act confirming the suspi- cions. Why should an innocent man resist arrest, and with such desperate vio- lence? My blood bolled at the thought that I had been betrayed by this ruffianly policeman’s illegal violence into doing that which would send me to prison and so interfere with my life's business — = PROPOSALS.
