D—12 THE EVENING STAR, WASIHINGTON, C., THURSDAY, APRIL a9 29y 1951, DISTANT UNIVERSES WILL BE EXPLORED . Noted Astrenomer Hopes to Look 400,000,000 Years Into Past With New Glass. By the Associated Press MOUNT WILSON OBSERVATORY Calif. April 23—Dr. win Hubble, noted explorer of the skies, hopes soon to view island uni es as they existed some 400,000,000 years ago. | Before the astronomers and astro- B‘hwlclsw of the Carnegle Institution of vashington Laboratory here yesterday he discussed explorations among distant nebula with a 100-inch telescope, now the world's largest | Mystifying problems had developed he said, that perhaps will be solved on! by erection of the proposed new 200 inch telescope of the Carnegie Institu- tion in Southern California. Then, he said, it will be known whether some remote island universes are traveling at apparent velocities of two and a quarter million miles a minute away from this neighborhood of the skies. It all hinges upon the interpretation of what is known as the Red Shift in the spectrum of these island universes, which he said he believed to be evidence of the recession of the nebul The present 100-inch telescope has an observable limit of 300.000.000 light vears. A light year is equivalent to six million million miles, being the dis light travels in a year. Spectrograr analysis of mebula is possible at only half that distance. Milton U. Humason, sssistant to Dr. | Hubble, sometime ago completed a spec- trum specograph of a nebula about 120,000,000 light years distance, esti- mating its speed of travel through space to be 11,000 miles a second. Dr. Hubble said the proposed 200-inch telescope would reveal some four to six times as many distant island universes as the present instrument, and unveil the secret of variations in their lum- inosity., He estimates some 30,000,000 | island universes are in the present ob- servable reglon FOR CLEANING UP CITY| District Commissioners Distribute | Prizes Given Annually by Club.
