C—8 HOSPITAL BOON T0 MIDDLE CLASS French Institution to Have| Modern Features With Greatest Economy. ’ (NANA) —The new Fochl Hospital at Suresnes, when it is bullt, | will be & great blessing to the middle; class people for whom it is to p‘mldel accommodation. That vast middle class, comprising professors and their families, scient!sts, engineers, is badly in need | ©of a hospital of this kind. | French hospitals, being state sup- ported, are run on very economical lines | and though the work of surgeons and physicians may be excellent, the nurs- | ing. catering and general housekeeping | leave enough to be desired to make home | nursing preferable even emong the! poorer classes. Private Nurses Expensive. Private nurses are expensive and are ostly foreign. Traveling on the Metro to the Place @'Ttalie or the Gobelins you may obtain 8 good view of the nursing schools of Paris, in the vast Salpetriere, The estab- Yichment is like a small town and it was, in fact, at the end of the eighteenth century the largest hospital in Europe. In those days it was a refuge for the aged and the insane as well as the sick, but.also had a women'’s prison, complete with\ underground cells and torture chamber. During' the nineteenth century ma experiments were conducted at the Sa petrriere with a view to improving the mentality of the insane, including treat- ment by music and the more successful method of employing the lunatic in manual work. Nowadays the hospital g also & large experimental field, par- cularly for the treatment of nervous gliseases by hypnotism. Art of Invalid Cookery. The nursing school is in a separate #pavillon” and the curriculum includes, Desides theoretical and practical nursing, the art of invalid cookery. There are, of course, the Hotel-Dieu and the great maternity hospital in the Boulevard de Port Royal, and for Brit- ish and American visitors, who may. fall 11l there are the Hertford British Hos- pital and the American Hospital, though these two latter institutions already have {ar t00 many calls upon their re- PARIS " has successfully supplied a much- want among middle-class people, but | s now too small to bs anything like adequate to the demands made upon it. NORFOLK, Va., April 23.—Swooping | down over a warehouse roof in the heart of the city at 80 miles per hour, Roger Wolfe Kahn of New York Tues- day demonstrated that air mail can be picked up safely by a plane from the roof of a tall building. After two unsuccessful attempts, due to stiff cross winds, Kahn, at the con- trols of a monoplane, swung a hook into the catapulting machine and darted away with two pouches weighing & total of 25 pounds. It was the first time in the history of aviation that an object had been picked up from the roof of a building by a heavier-than- alr craft, A. W. Card, eagineer, who perfected the pick-up device, said. Considerable interest in e device | wes shown by Col. R. Y. Rhea, com- mandant of Marines at the Norfolk Navy Yard who watched the tests. Col. | Rhea asked particularly whether a light enough device could be develcped for transportation on mule back, particu- larly in Central America. He was as- sured that this could be done. Kahn, the son of Otto H. Kahn, financier, was accompanicd to Norfclk by his wife. During the experiments, Mrs. Kahn was at the warehouse, but | did not see the attempts. Each time her | hushand swooped down she turned her | sand and buried her head in her arms until the plane e past the roof.
