By the Associated Pre: NEW YORK, April 11.—Isaac Gim- bel, who started his business career at the age of 13 in Vincennes, Ind., and became one of the greatest merchants of his time, died of bronchial pneu- monia today at his home at Port Chester, N. Y. He was 74. Mr. Gimbel was chairman of the board of Gimbel Bros., Inc. Ill health fosced him to retire in the ll"el‘lglrt of 1927 from the presidency of Gimbel Bros, & post he had held for many years. His son, Bernard F. Gimbel, succeeded him. Isaac was one of a small group of men who built the present great de- partment store organizations in Amer- ica. At the age of 13 he accompanied his elder brother Joseph from Philadelphia, where the family was then living, back to his birthplace, Vincennes, to run a dry goods store founded there in 1842 by his father, Adam Gimbel. Their first branch was opened in Danville, Tll. In 1887 they acquired a site in Milwaukee and opened there a store which is still one of the largest in_the Middle West. In 1894 Mr. Gimbel moved back to Philddelphia, where he opened another large store on the site of the present Gimbel Philadelphia store. In 1910 he achieved what had been his ambition for a long time—a New York store—and built it up into one of the largest department stores in New York. While he was president, Gimbel Bros. acquired the Saks Fifth avenue and Saks Herald Square stores. They added another store in Pittsburgh. The company new owns seven stores in five cities, employing 15,000 persons. Mr. Gimbel kept out of the public eye as much as he could. He rarely made a speech or any public statement. Years ago made a written request to his associ: that there should be no pause in the activities of the busi- ness at the time of his death. This request is to be observed. His funeral will be conducted Tues- day at Temple Emanuel, New York. His body will be placed in, the family ;n;xl;,] Im Mount Sinai Cemetery, Phila- elphia. Mr. Gimbel is survived by his wite, two sons, Bernard F. and Frederic A Gimbel, and three brothers, Charles, Ellis A. and Daniel Gimbel. Douglas of Northampton, Mass., chairman of the Committee on Woment in Industry. The proposal has been made without regard to any par- ticular legislative measure, she said. The council will consider anew the subject of the direct primary which has | been stanchly supported by the league | for 10 years. Prof. Ralph Boots of the | department of political science of the University of Pittsburgh will be the | principal speaker at this session, | Through a series of round tables and | dramatic presentations, criticisms of | the primary will be discussed and sug- gestions for its improvement will be considered. | The unveiling of the bronze memorial tablet on which are recorded the 72 | names on the league's national roll of | honor will take place at the league headquarters on the afternoon of April 15.
