NASHVILLE, Tenn., April 11—Dr. E. P. Aldredge, statistician for the | Southern Baptist Convention, said in a report made public today that last year the church recorded the greatest net| gain in membership since 1923 and that | in the last five years baptisms on pro- fession of faith have exceeded the total for any other two denominations in the United States. The report is & summary of Southern Baptist gains and losses in New Mexico, Misouri, Southern Illinois, Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas, Ar- kansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia. | Florida, Louisiana, Arizona, Maryland | and the District of Columbia. It will | be presented to th: Southern Baptist | Convention at its meeting May 13 to 16 at_Birmingham, Ala. ‘The net gain in membership in 1930 | was 79,841, an increase brought about | in spits of a net loss of 289 in the num- \ ber of congregations, the report said. | The number of baptisms in 1930 was 198,309, a gain of 22,926 over 1929. A total of 957,924 bApU.Sms on profession | of faith have been reported in the last | five years. Although the number of ordulnrd ministers fell off from 23,431 to 22,926, Dr. Aldredge said, this was due to a re- | check of lists and the removal of names of ministers who had long since died or removed from the convention's bounds. He said there had been no ac- | tual loss. Dr. Aldredge sald gifts to the church | last year lacked approximately $2,000 000 of equaling those of 1929. He at- tributed the decline in contributions to | business depression, but said in spite of | this the value of all church property increased $4,679,815 last year. ‘The report said that contributions for all purposes totaled $37,479,700.44 last year, as compared with $39,337,148.98 in 1929, the total decline of $1857,- 448.54 being termed “a catastrophe that never before took place in the history of Southern Bapr,m work.” “A TRIPLE ASSURANCE" {Foundry M.
