FIVE FRAT HOUSES G0 UNDER PADLOCK 79 Michigan U. Students Also to Answer Individually After Raid. By the Associated Press. ANN ARBOR, Mich., February 13.— Students of five prominent fraternities on the University of Michigan campus were preparing to vacate their houses today, under an edict of the university Student Affairs Committee, which or- dered the houses closed until Septem- ber 1 because liquor was found in them. The fraternities affected are Theta Delta Chi, Phi Delta Theta, Delta Kappa Epsilon, Kappa Sigma and Sigma Alpha Epsilon. The fraternities will be on ‘“social probation” during the 1931-32 school year and thus prohibited from holding social functions. The university com- mittee warned the national officers of the five fraternities that : recurrence of the offense would result in cancel- lation of their charters at Ann Arbor. ‘The faculty committee decided on its disciplinary action yesterday afternoon, electing to punish the fraternities in whose houses liquor was found in a series of police raids Wednesday as organizations. As individuals the 79 students booked by '.hemlice after the raids must still make their peace with the' law, but that settlement is to be deferred. The set for today in Justice Court will be continued for two weeks, Coun- Prosecutor Albert Rapp said yester- , to await the final outcome of the university’s inquiry. ‘The “padlock” order creates a grave financial problem for the five organi- gations, both members and alumni said last night, and this was considered by many as even more important than the curtailment of social privileges. ‘The fraternities are among the Remescnt tavesiments of frem $135008 | represent investments of from X to $175,000. By the Associated Press. PHILADELPHIA, February 13.—Syn- thetic air, composed of helium an oxygen, as a means of sustaining the respiration of deep sea divers has re- ceived the approval of Capt. Sloan Danenhower, widely known submarine and salvage engineer. Capt. Danenhower, who will command the Wilkins submarine Nautilus on its underseas dash to the North Pole this Summer, made a diving test at the Phil- adelphia Navy Yard Tuesday in which the synthetic air was used. “No one has ever been under water before with helium,” Danenhower said, as he came up from the bottom of the Delaware River. “The taste and smell are different from ordinary air. I think its use is entirely feasible.” The advantage of using helium- oxygen. he explained, is that it will diminish the tendency for divers to get the “bends” after emerging from great depths. The “bends” are a type of severe cramps. : “Also,” he said, “it will increase the efficlency of divers as to the depth they can go, the time they can work under the surface and the speed with which they can go through the decompression process. “Ordinary air has considerable nitro- gen in it, and this, under great pres- sure, dissolves in the blood. When the pressure is decreased the nitrogen ex- pands in the circulatory system. and i | this happens too suddenly the diver gets the ‘bends.’.” BIG STILL NETS FINE Canadian Judge Considers Cost of Outfit to Loser.
