CAPAEN AGHNST WATERWAYS HT Gen. Ashburn Charges Mis- information Published on ‘River Transportation. By the Associated Press. ST. LOUIS, February 13.—Maj. Gen. T. Q. Ashburn, head of the Inland Waterways Corporation, in a statement here yesterday, assailed what he termed & “persistent, malevolent campaign against further development of our waterways.” Maj. Gen. Ashburn said figures were being published in an attempt to show that “hidden costs” in Federal barge line operation make river transportation costs amount to more than rail trans- portation. ‘The hidden costs of river transporta- tion, he said, are not more than 1.23 mills per ton mile, while anti-river advocates are attempting to place the figures at 6.62 mills per ton mile, ‘The actual cost of transporting by river, he said, is now 546 mills, “as opposed to the actual operating costs of the railroads of almost exactly 10 mills per ton mile.” “Obviously,” he commented, “these attempts to disclose hidden costs are red herrings drawn across the trail to distract our attention from the fact we are actually getting what we set out to get—cheap water transportation.” Maj. Gen. Ashburn was here on an inspec- tion trio. . SHIPPING NEWS Arrivals at and Sailings From New York. ARRIVED,. Bermuda—Bermud: Duchess of York—] Santa Marta—Santa Mart DUE TODAY.
