BALTIMORE & OHIO - RENEWING CHARGES Newspaper Writer Replies to Denial, Saying Chairman Resorted to Deceit. Frank R. Kent, Democratic columnist of the Baltimore Sun, reiterated his i charges that John J. Raskob has gained an ‘“unhealthy” financial control over the Democratic party in an open letter yesterday, replying to Raskob’s denial ot the charges. Kent accused the chairman of the Democratic National Committee of re- sorting to “cheap stuff” in hinting that the columnist had joined with a group of Republicans in stirring up “religious and class hatreds.” He pointed out he had made no mention of religion and was opposed to bigotry. Holds Letter Deceitful. Describing Raskob's letter as “evasive, deceitful and disingenuous,” Kent d clared the epistle was “deliberately de- signed to conceal the facts—not to clarify them.” “All T did,” Kent pointed out, “was take the fad and figures revealed by Mr. Gerard’s report to the House of Representatives, together with other - known facts about your party and print them in a logical sequence. The_result, Kent continued, “scared” both Raskob and his “pay roll boys.” Criticizing Raskob for allowing six days to elapse before replying to his charges, the Baltimorean termed the Democratic chairman “just a breast-beating ama- teur in politics. who has had the covers pulled o him.” Repeats Principal Charge. Kent repeated the -principal charge made in his article in the Baltimore Sun of January 6—that Raskob has as- sumed the debts of the Democratic party. Asserting the party owes its National Committee chajrman $250,000, he added: “I further assert that it owes you more every month, not less, and that in the last campaign the records show nine- tenths of all money contributed came from you. I further assert that, in the | history of this country, no political !Fm_v was ever under such financial ob- igations to any individual as the Dem- ocratic party is under you today. You brought the party out of bankruptcy, ! put it through the receivership, stood it on iis financial feet and then clapped a first mortgage on it. You are the first-mortgage holder.” Kent denied he had inferred Raskob became a Democrat because the party's candidate in the last presidential race, Alfred E. Smith, is a Roman Catholic, as is the committee chairman. “You know perfectly well that I hate bigots as bitterly as vyou and have fought them with a clearer conscience,” Kent said. “You know that part of your letter is rot. You are not dumbo, and you know better.” THE WEATHER District of Columbia—Fair and colder tonight with lcwest temperature about 20 degrees, tomorrow fair and con- tinued cold, rising temperature Priday; gentle shifting winds becoming moderate to_fresh northwest tonight.
