This marking of birds with numbered bands is fostered by the Agriculture Department’s Bureau of Biological Sur- vey: as the studies incident thereto constitute an important and interesting field of bird-life research. Banding makes possible the study of a bird as an individual, separating the numbered bird from all others of his soecies and enabling the recording of his life history. Over 500,000 birds have been banded under permit in the United States and Canada by co-operators of the biological survey, and from these more than 20,000 usable return records have been reported to the bureau. [ 1 Upon the crumbling cuter wall of the ruined city of Opar stood a lone figure. Tarzan, Jane Clayton and their black Wazirl were the only strangers that the denizens of Opar had ever seen within their valley. Only in half-forgotten legends of & by-gone past was there any suggestion that strangers other than these had ever visited Opar. Yet from time immemorial a guard had always remained upon the summit of the outer wall. Down through the ages the race had deteriorated and finally through occasional matings with the great apes, the men had become the beast-like things they were. Yet through some strange freak of nature, the women of Opar were siraight, well formed, often of comely, even beautiful features, Typleal of the men was this lone watcher, short, stocky, and with matted hair. His low, receding forehead, small, close-set eyes and fang-like teeth bore evidence of his monkey ancestry as did his short crooked legs and long, muscular ape-like arms. STAR, WASHINGTON, D. Some 1,500 persons have been supplied with bands, most of whom operate stations where birds are systemati= cally trapped and banded throughout the year. Bands have been placed on 437 specie: of North American birds, of which 231 have yuldzd one or more return reports. Hunters send in As his wicked eyes watched the pr party across the valley, low growls issul many of the reports, but the reports on non-game species ate secured mainly through the retrapping by the bird Jovers and students who operate the feeding stations and traps. Banding and reporting are of particular importance in working out the routes, the resting and feeding areas, and the points at which_the various birds breed and Winter. Descending the wall, he passed at a rapid trot across the broad avenue beyond, and disappeared within a crumbling but still magnificent temple. Cadj, the high priest of Opar, squatted beneath the shade of the giant ‘trees which now overgrew what had once been one of the gardens of the ancient temple. ‘With Cadj, were a dozen members of the lesser priesthood, his intimate cronles. All showed much concern as the breathless guard came among them and cried: “Strange men descend upon Opar—50 of them at least, still a great dis- tance away!” All waited for Cadj to speak. “It has been many moons since the great Tarmangani, who called himself Tarzan of the Apes, was among us,” spoke Cadj solemnly. “He promised to return to see that no harm befell La.
