By the Associated Press. NEWARK, N. J., January 14—Pay- ment of $36,493,668 in bonuses to officlals of the Bethlehcm Steel Cor- tion since 1917 is attacked by four stockholders of the company in a suit filed in the Court of Chancery. The suit asks for an accounting and the refunding of any part of the bonus | | total found to be excessive. The com- plainants also ask for an injunction restraining officers of the company from making further bonus payments until | the suit is settled. ‘The defendants named are Eugene G. Grace, president; Charles M. Schwab, chairman, and 15 past and present directors of the company. Vice Chancellor John H. Backes said he would announce today whether the preliminary injunction would be granted. Testimony Revealed Payments, The complainants are Camillus Berendt of Hoboken, who holds 16 shares; Benjamin Glickfield of New York, 500 shares; David Tait of Hack- ensack, 10 shares, and James E. Riley, | New York, 30 shares. Their holdings | are all of common stock. | The complainants say that the facts | of the bonus payments were lcarned last Summer from testimony in the trial of a suit to prevent the merger of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation and the Youngstown Sheet, & Tube Co. | Grace testified that his bonuses since 1925 had been: 1925, $700,473; 1926, $852,160; 1927, $721,885; 1928, $831,445; 1929, $1,623,753 The bonuses for six other officers in | 1929, all of whom are named in the | stockholders’ suit were; Quincey Be $378,664; C. Austin Buck, $378,66: John M. Goss, $110,077; H. Edgar Lewis, $375,784; Robert E. McMath, $134,538. end James H. Ward, $54,305. Bonuses Not Disclosed. The bill of complaint charges that the shareholders approved the bonus system at their annual meeting April 3, 1917, on the understanding that the bonus was to offer an incentive to such services as would be of the greatest profit ta the corporation. “It was not represented to the stock- holders,” the complaint continues, “or understood by them that enormous and was intrusted with the amounts of the bonuses, has dis- closed the amounts to the board of directors and that the directors neglect- gwmummwnmtmcmmm ADOPTS NOVEL METHOD IN HOUSING DIPLOMAT U. 8.
