SMALL TOWNS’ END SEEN BY ECONOMIST Uncertain Future for Individual | Merchant Is Also Painted ‘ at Conference. By the Associated Press. | WINTER PARK, Fla, January 9.— Economists and professors painted an uncertain future for individual mer- | chants in round-table discussions at the | Third Annual Institute on Statesman- | ship at Rollins College here Wednesday. | Not only has the individual a small chance to be himself in years to come, | but the day of the small town is done | as well, Dr. Ray Westerfield of Yale | University said. “There is no reason for all these small towns, one every six | miles or so, either_economically or so- cially,” Dr. Westerfield said. Dr.' C. W. Phelphs, professor of eco- nomics_at the University of Chatta- | nooga, took exception to the attitude of the “intelligentsia” toward chain stores, saying they were prone to be pro-chain and to talk only of the advantages of the system. | John Temple Graves, 2d, editor of the Birmingham Age-Herald, addressed the institute last night. “The modern South.” he said, “is the hope of indi- | vidualism. “Southerners have always been in- dividualists. They still are. Temper that individualism with a liberalism which the South has heretofore lacked | but which it is rapidly acquiring and you have a perfect stronghold in which the philosophy may be maintained and from which it may successfully sally.” PREPARE FOR BIG BALL All-States Affair Chairmen Meet | for Luncheon.
