By the Associated Press. BROWNSVILLE, Tex., December 30. —A lure of gold and gems, as well as a scientific quest for knowledge, drew two American fiyers, Capt. W. F. Long and Al Hargraves, both of Dallas, toward the jungles of Yucatan today. The take-off delayed yesterday by Mexican regulations, Capt. Long said he hoped to start at 7 am., reach Mexico City by night and, after pick- ing up a Mexican archeologist, con- tinue to Yucatan. He said he planned to find some ancient citles of the Maya Indians, photograph them from the air, and land for ground exploration if the ter- rain permitted. If landing was impos- sible, he said, he and the archeologist would jump with parachutes and “take a chance” of finding their way to civili- zation. Capt. Long intimated he had a clue to the whereabouts of ancient treasures hoarded by the Indians and overlooked by Spanish soldiers when they con- quered the country many years ago. “It is useless to tell people we have a scientific purpose and at the same time are embarked on a treasure hunt,” he said. “But it's true. NEW YORK, December 30.—Gerard | Swope, president of the General Electric Co., said today that the electrical manufacturing industry ap- proaches 1931 in the confident belief that “it should surely be no worse and possibly somewhat better than 1930.” “The belief was predicted,” he ex- plained in a year-end survey, “on the expectation that the forces that en- abled the industry to emerge from 1930 suffering less perhaps from the effects of the business depression than many others, would continue to prove a con- structive influence in 1931.” | been but a slight decline in the use | of electric power by commercial organizations and in industry, and that the electric energy used in the homes, even in this year of depression, has increased over 1929. “We expect this course to continue, and therefore look forward with confi- Visit Our Optical Department at Once and Have Your Eyes Examined FREE Special Offer— Genuine Invisible Bifocal Lenses* regularly for $12. ENID, Okla, December 30.—A Dis- trict Court jury was to hear more evidence today in the sanity hearing of Mrs. Dollie Douthitt, elderly widow who faces three charges of assault with intent to kill in connection with a court room shooting here September 26. The hearing got under way late yesterday after Judge E. A. Summers continued an assault case against the widow. Dr. W. L. Kendall and Dr. C. W. Tedrowe, Enid - physicians, testified. They believe Mrs. Douthitt was suffer- ing from delusions of persecution. The specific charge of which Mrs. Douthitt was to go to trial yesterday alleges she shot H. Z. Wedgwood, United States commissioner, who was opposing her in a civil suit in which a decision unfavorable to the woman was handed down by District Judge Arthur G. Sutton.
