Met. 2042, “INCLE SAM AT YOUR SERVICE” " During the first month of the 12-month course which every naval officer or enlisted man must take before he can hope to wear the coveted gold wings of a naval aviator, the student class do all their studying on the P¥n7und ‘The elemgntary subjects are: Theory of Flight, Structive and Rigging, Avia- tion Engines, Weather Forecasting, Radio and Air- craft Instruments. In the Theory of Flight class one learns why an airplane, which is heavier than air, can be made to fly. After studying Structure and Rigging the class must set up an emtire air- plane, install the engine and then lllzn it so that it is in perfect balance. When this is done it is given an inspection by experts and an instructor takes it out and flies it. All subjects which are taught are of practical value to an aviator, and thorough examinations are given in every lubjecL And, sad to relate, the elimination process comes TARZAN AND THE GOLDEN LION. It happened that on the very day when Tarzan so fully demonstrated his power to make the golden lion bend to the ape-man’s will, far off in London a quite different scene was taking place. The a« tors in this scene were to play during the next few months quite as important parts in the ape-man’s life as would Jad-bal-ja, the golden lion. A rather attractive-looking, though over-dressed, young wom- an was dining in a second-rate cl use along the Thames. Coarsely beautiful as she was, it was her companion who arrested attention. INSTRUCTION COURSES. (Continued.) SITUATIONS—WOMEN. He was a large man, whose broad shoulders, dee] chest, narrow hips, his six-foot-three of height suggested the trained athlete. The two were in close conversation. It gave evidence of bordering Fcn heated argument. “I tell you,” said the man, hat I do not see what we need of the others. Why divide that which you and I might have alone?” “Because,” replied the woman, “it takes money to make money. Without it the plan fails. mtkhzr of us have much. Navy Fledglings. into its own again at this step and always claims a few of the once hopeful volunteers. Now for the next trial. The prospective flyer finds himself seated on a long bench as he awaits his turn in one of the training planes with his personal instructor. Men who have won their wings are frank to confess that at this point the talking and kidding that go on the bench are camouflage, resorted to by every rookie to hide from his fellows that sort of hollow feeling in the pit of the stomach bred of exciting anticipation. At last the instructor climbs into & seaplane, an NY2 which is used for all elementary flight training in the Navy, and he signals for the man on the end of the ben¢: to come aboard in the rear cockpit and take the controls. You furnish the knowledge and I am to take the risk,” said the man, whose black hair and olive skin proclaimed him a Spaniard. “Don’t muddle this business, Esteban,” sald the girl with a shrug. “Take my advice and be satisfied with a fifth. That would “”‘,’ you famously all your nat- ural life. Remember, I found you. I have all the papers besides, yet I do not ask the lion’s share.” ‘The man did not seem convinced and the young ‘woman had a feeling he would bear watching. SALE—MISCELLANEOUS. (Continued.). SALE—IIISCmANEOIJS. Really, Flora Hawkes knew very little about Este- ban. Two months ago she had seen his likeness on the screen of a movie house. He was playing the part of a gladiator in a film of ancient Rome. His heroic size and perfect physique at once told her that he was the man she had been searching for. He was the type and Flora knew that one dif- ficulty had been settled for her. Months had she and her confederates searched. With him she felt the gold of Opar was almost in her grasp. They sat a moment in silence. Presently she looked up. SALE—AUTOMOBILES. (Continued.)
