By the Assoclated Pres: NEW YORK, December 22.—Inven- tories in the food industry now are at suh a low point that the slightest flurry of buying should have an immediate beneficial effect, says C. M. Chester, jr. president General Foods Corporation. In a year-end statement prepared for the Associated Press on the state of the food industry Mr. Chester noted that in the course of a recen: business trip which carried him as ‘far West as Den- ver he found & more positive note of optimism “which I have not heard in New York.” The banking situation in most of the larger cities he found to ke excellent. Plan Vigorous Campaign. “In common with other companies in the food industry, General Foods is planning a vigorous campaign for busi- | ness in 1931,” he said. “The aggres: sive sales and advertising policies ca: ried cut so effectively during 1930 will be continued in 1931. The population of America is constantly increasing. More food must be consumed, and a greater volume of business scems in- evitable.” | He anticipated the industry would make a favorable showing for the cur-| rent year. “A recent compilation indicates that a group of 19 food-producing companies i showsd a decrease in combined earnings suffered & drop of 33.3 per cent in com- | bined net from the previous year. Gen- eral Foods will report net earnings aj proximating those of the previous year. Important Stock Groups.
