STONE. Life insurance written in the Dis- trict of Columbia in November was 9 per cent under the amount sold in No- vember, 1929, according to the monthly report received today from Hartford, Cenn. The United States as a whole did not | yecord as good a showing, sales being 17 per: cent below the corresponding manth last year. Delaware was the only State in the Union that made a gain— 4 per cent over November, 1929, Among the Southern States North Carolina made the best showing,. sales being off but 6 per cent from last year. Fl was the same as Washington, while life insurance sales in Maryland were off 14 per cent, South Carolina and Georgia 17 per cent, West Virginia 1 cent and Virginia 22 per cent. and Tennessee were off 32 per cent and Mississippi was at the bot- tom of the list with a drop of 42 per cent in November insurance. Kentucky made & 1 per cent better mark than the District of Columbia and Idaho, Nebraska, New Jersey and Wyoming also stood above the District in the list. The report adds that the volume of life insurance written in the first 11 months of 1930 was larger than in any previous year except 1929. Mak- ing a conservative estimate for Decem- ber business means that 1930 will, with the single exception of 1929, make a ew record for all years. Sales this year will be over $1,000,- 000,000 greater than in 1925, an in- crease which practically eqials the amount the entire country paid for in 2900. If 1930 sales of ordinary life in- surance are compared with 1920 the volume is over half again as large; to 15 years ago, the insurance shows & gain of almost 400 per eent, today's report concludes. Hethesda Bank Votes Dividends. Directors of the Bank of Bethesda have .declared the regular semi-annual dividend of 3 per cent and also an ex- tra disbursement of 1 per cent. T. & T. It is probable that American Tele- phone & Telegraph Co. for 1930 will show net income of about $168,000,000, or $10.50 a share, on about 16,000,000 avengr::mu outstanding, says the ‘Wall t Journal. That would com- pn ‘with $166,189,758, or $12.67 a share on an average of only 13,113,746 shares, in 1929. Thus the company will have earned the $9 dividend re- quirement on its stock, with $1.50 to m ite the large increase in the adverse effects of the lephone business this year has been ‘decidedly flat, and while the re- ered satisfactory in view conditions, the increase in is well below what- telephone regard as & “normal increase.” ‘Both dividends recetved from associated and actual telephone rev- enues will show a gain for the yeer. During the year, the Journal adds, a severe shrinkage in the rate of gain in new stations was suffered by the Bell System, and it is probable that the net increase will be the smallest in 20 years. : Today'’s Trading on Exchange. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, December 22.—Lower prices were the rule in today's trans- actions on the Stock Exchange. Few of the losses, however, were large and activity fell off on the decline. The market had a number of dis- turbing developments to appraise. A banking failure in Philadelphia and an- other in Miami depressed sentiment. Wheat went to another new low and, inasmuch as commodity prices are closely followed nowadays by specula- tors in stocks, that was not helpful either. ' Then the November railway earnings . statements began to come along in numbers and they made the usual dismal showing. Bright Spots. ‘The only relatively bright spots were the auto_industry, the responsible lead- ers of which continue to express confi- dence in Spring business and to act on that confidence, and a widespread re- port that the Anaconda Copper directors at their meeting Wednesday would make no further reduction in the dividend rate. During the early trading copper stocks ranged higher, standing out on that account. Most of the time the motors were steady. Special interest was taken in Chrysler and General Motors held well. Both of them sold off later when the rest of the market turned downward. The general list was under pressure, with rather sharp declines in some of the higher-priced es, including Al- lied Chemical, Coca-Cola and Eastman Kodak. United States Steel, during the morning hours, sold down to 139, where it was nearly 3 points below last week’s high. American Telephone & “Telegraph and Consolidated Gas, higher at the start, fimally yielded and the same was true of American Can. Among the new lows were those of Kroger Grocery & Bakery and United Fruit. Selling of the former was in re- sponse to the omission of the stock divi- dened announced over the week end. United Fruit was heavily sold and added 3 points to the 6 it had lost last week. Th(' next dividend meeting is not sched- uled until February 10, so that concern on that score seems premature. In the first nine months of 1930 the sum of $3.52 a share was earned on the stock and it would seem probable that the $4 dividend will have been covered by the end of the year. Meanwhile the com- pany’s financial position is known to be strong. leroad stocks reacted after their recent brisk rise. New York Central broke through 114 against the high of 119 on Priday. Union Pacific and Baltimore & Ohio were down 2 to 3 points and losses were recorded in Southern Pacific, Chicago & North- western, Illinois Central and Great Northern preferred. Chesapeake & Ohio ‘made better resistance. Prices Slip After Opening. The market, after opening with ir- regular and unimportant price changes, turned slightly weaker. Trading was dull, with the ticker making frequent pauses. News developments over the week end were few, about the only item of importance being reports of a good shopping trade for Christmas and a further decline in commodity prices. Money renewed unchanged at 2 per cent. During the first half hour shares traded amounted to 266,200 against 309,400 in the same period Saturday, Kroger Grocery, reflecting the . di- rectors’ announcement that there would be no stock dividend for the comin year, was a feature. After opening fractionally it sold at a new low, down over 2 points. Union Pacific was a weak spot in the rails, off 4 points. United States Steel was ofl nearly a point. Representative movements in the various groups were Westinghouse Electric, off fractionally; Kennecott, unchanged; Bethlehem Steel, un- changed; New York Centrzl, off 1; Standard O1il of New Jersey, un- changed; American Telephone, off fractionally, and General Motors, off a| Chrysler was strong and ac- tive. Local Market. Christmas turkey prices will range from 37 cents a pound to 50 cents or slightly more, it was indicated on the local market today. Top prices for Thanksgiving were 45 cents and they ranged downward to about 35. Chain store prices announced today were 37 and 39 cents. Most of the independent dealers at Center Market were quoting prices of 50 cents and some said that they might even be higher by tomor- row or Wednesday. 2 Wholesalers this morning quoted prices to shippers as for choicest fresh killed stock as high as 42 cents. There were very few turkeys on the country line this morning. They are fresh killed and from nearby, however, and were offered at retail at 45 cents. U. S. TREASURY BALANCE. The United States Treasury balance announced teday as of close of business December 19 was $361,029,363.25. Cus- toms receipts for the month to date ‘were $21,346,604.90. Total ordinary ex- penditures $12,811,950.60. Standard Oil of New York. NEW YORK, December 22 (Special). —At its recent low price Standard Oil of New York stock sold on an 8 per cent basis. It is now quoted on about a 7' per cent yield. This is said to be the highest for this stock since 1912. In the first nine months of this year the company earned in excess of the $1.60 dividend being declared and is understood to have cash and market- able securities, the latter mostly of a short-term character, of over $45,000,- 000. The return on Standard of New York compares with about 4.20 per cent on Standard of New Jersey and around 5% per cent on Standard of California. BANK CLEARINGS. NEW YORK, December 22 (Special).
