A—16 sx U. . LINER RAMMED BY DANSH VESSEL George Washington Slightly| Damaged—Other Ships “ in Collisions. (4 S W By the Associated Press. {, LONDON, December 22.—Blinded by fog, ships in the North and Baltic Seas, along the English Channel, in the Bay “of Biscay and even as far south as the . Eastern Mediterranean, crept slowly to- ward harbor today or anchored and awaited clearer weather. A number of collisions were reported, the most important from Hamburg, Where the United States liner George | ‘Washington, anchoring 10 miles from | her berth in the Elbe Estuary because of the fog, was rammed from behind by the Danish motor ship Malaya. | ‘The Malaya's bow was so badly bashed in she would have sunk had not her captain, pulling her apart from the‘ American ship, beached her. The | George Washington, no one aboard in- Jured, was towed to port. Fear Soya Bean Blast. The holds of the Malaya are filled with soya beans, and her officers feared they would soak up so much water that | they would swell and burst the ship’s | sides. The noise_of the collision was | heard along the Elbe water front, but the fog was so dense rescue tugs had a difficult time finding the two ships. ‘The United States Shipping Board’s | Hopatcong of 6,216 tons, anchored in | Istanbul Roads to await lifting of the | fog, was struck by the British ship Rio Azul. The British ship was badly dnm-‘ aged and the American ship had a hole in her stern. At Lisbon the large fishing trawler Patria collided with a steamer and went down with four of her crew. The Dutch steamer Export and the British steamer Kemmel collided in a fog off Rotterdam, the Export returning to port and the British steamer continuing her voyage. ‘The British steam trawler William Hal- lett lost her bearings and went aground near Ballycotton, Ireland. Britain Hit by Fog. ‘With a falling temperature and a complete absence of wind a large part of Britain, particularly goutheast Eng- land and the London neighborhood, seemed doomed to a continuance of the fog_which has settled ovc. a large area of Western Europe. The patchiness of the visitation is one of its features, Cen- tral London being often clear while the suburbs are darkened to midnight ob- scurity, and vice versa. Many minor accidents were reported over the week end. Seven persons were cut and bruised in a collision of two motor busses between Caterham and South London. Several persons were knocked down and injured by cars in places. In some places motor traffic monopolized the sidewalks also, and conductors of busses frequently were obliged to walk ahead with lanterns. Air service was almost completely stopped. The pilot of one machine, landing at Croydon, was compelled to use his compass to steer himself across the landing field. LINER’S DAMAGE TRIVIAL, George Washington Expected to Sail Without Delay.
