NEW YORK, December 12.—Addi- tion of $1,418,000,000 to the assets of life insurance companies in the United States this year, despite the business depression, was forecgst today by Wal- ton L. Crocker, president of the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Co. of Boston, before the Association of Life Insurance Presidents. This sum, he said, will bring total investments of the companies to $18,- 900,000,000 at the end of the year. “The assets at the end of this year,” he declared, “will be double those held seven years ago and will be equal to more than three times the assets held at the end of 1917.” The figures he presented were com- piled in a survey of 52 companies Tepresenting 91.8 per cent of the total assets of all United States legal re- serve life insurance companies. Real estate mortgages, representing the leading investment medium of life insurance companies, comprise 40.3 per cent of their total assets, he said, ag- gregating $6,994,000,000. /Bonds and stocks, with a total of $6,531,000,000, or 37.6 per cent, are second in investment importance. “The whole exhibit,” Crocker sum- med up, “is an assurance, were any needed, that the funds of the life in- surance companies are stable to the highest degree.” RECOUNT SOUGHT WITH CONGRESS AID Oklahoman Defeated by Democrat in First District, Wires Rep- resentative 0’Connor. Mason, who was interested in the sheriff’s race recount in Ottawa County, flch resulted in reversing results and wing the Republican candidate to be the leader, said OConnor would gain ebough votes in the county to overwmt Disney’s lead in the district if a recoun ‘Were made. Official returns of the State election board gave Disney a lead of 360 in the district and 467 in Ottawa County. ‘The time for filing a contest in the State has expired. LONDON, December 12.—A message 10 Lloyds last night reported that the iwedish steamer Strassa had Kean, 3 as the latter vessel was foundering in the Atlantic 800 miles from Queenstown. The disabled schooner was set afire after the crew had been taken off to prevent her becoming a menance to navigation. The message did not disclose the cause of the trouble or the number rescued. By the Associated Press ISTANBUL, Turkey, December 12.— In Turkey it's radio that’s bootlegged. A thousand culprits have been caught in the last year. Radio is a monopoly of the govern- ment, and the clandestine listener-in who neglects to pay the required tax, or who buys his set from somebody other than the monopoly, is subject to & heavy fine.
