MACOMB, I, December 1.—An alleged petty burglar, docile appearing in his actions, suddenly turned into a desperate gunman yesterday, killing two policemen and wounding two cthers before he himself was slain by one of his victims. He was identified as Edwin Verll, 28, of Canton, Ill Veril, arrested on a loitering charge, in front of a battery station, began firing from an automatic pistol he had secreted in his sleeve, just as the auto- mobile in which he was being taken to Jail, arrived in front of the police sta- tion. Policeman Edward Whitlesly, 60, was the first to die. He was shot through the head as he stepped from the machine. Shooting Takes Three Minutes. Turning quickly, the gunman sent a bullet into the abdomen of Policeman Ernest Bowman, 36, fatally wounding him and then switched the fire of his gun on Alfred Links, driver of the car, ‘wounding him critically. At this point in the fight, Luther Jackson, another policeman, already suffering from a wound received in a fight with burglars three weeks ago, ran from the police station and was hit in one of his wrists in an exchange of shots with Veril, who this time ‘had taken the wheel of car in an effort to escape. Veril, however, got no farther. than a block from the station, before the dying Bowman mustered enough strength to rise from his prostrate position in the car and empty the curtrldxes of his pistol into Veril's back. ‘The whole fight occupied ]ess (hlin three minutes. Police Taken by Surprise. The police apparent]; were taken by complete surprise, as Veril, when ac- costed by them near the battery sta- tion, willingly submitted to a search which revealed nothing but a short piece of steel, He entered the automo- bile without protest, and there wes no reason to suspect that he would at- tempt escape. - Attendants at the battery station, however, had suspected Veril was up to. lome mischief and telephoned police. uted to have been a drug lddu:t spent some time in Peoria, was known to police as a nlnbkr Canton rolice said he also had a record there as an automobile thief and highway prowler.
