With Mr. Cantor to roll his eyes and Mr. Ziegfeld to deck the stage with frills and minimum feminine furbelows, there is nothing “Renegades” at the Fox, Picturesque War Drama. Giv- ing force to the scene, the tricolor is seen triumphant, while the strains of “The Marseillaise” accompany the march of victorious commands. ‘The screen drama adds one more to the series of impressive stories about a region which evidently has been chosen as about the last place in which individual glory may be achieved by military endeavor and in which the soldier of fortune may be a factor of importance. There is also the merit that small fighting units may logically be employed to lend aid to the fiction that an in- dividual or a group of characters may turn the tide of battle in an age in which the World War, with its vast machines, is still a vivid memory. ‘Warner Baxter and Myrna Loy are the chief actors in a pseudo- romance which is the chief emo- tional incident in a picture of Euro- pean and African colonial struggle. Both have roles which are exacting and continually in evidence, and they perform with creditable skill. ‘There is also a commendable piece of work by Noah Beery as an asso- ciate of the character presented by Baxter, while George Cooper and C. Henry Gordon add to the interest in “Renegaces.” Another feature of the program at the Fox is the singing by the lyric soprnno rrom Panama, Senorita Maria Packeco, who makes her North Am";cnn debut, with accom- panying m § ‘c by the Fox Orchestra under the 1:adership of Leon Brusi- loff. Her bell-like tones and wide range of voice make her number an attractive addition to the program. Fanchon and Marco give the “City Bervice” idea in their stage presen- tation, making comedy, fie emerges in its second life at cnlumbh with possibly more more that one can ask. In this case its_just about “'nough said!” ‘The story of “The Nervous Wreck” vehicle, serves Mr. tter effect than many a had before. Built with insistency on the idea that this gentleman may die at any moment from one of his 50,000,000 operations, or the gyrations of his selmred stomach, it has a real cli- max in the exhibitions of operation scars between Cantor and a friend. It has other climaxes, too—such as the bargain scene in the Indian “reservation” and the tableau in which a dozen or more maidens, clothed with the best Indian feathers that Mr. Ziegfeld could buy, come down apparently from a mountain and stand around as I as they may without catching cold. ‘There is good music to be heard now and then—due to Mr. Donald- son—a lively group of actors—every- thing, in fact, to insure a pleasant evening of wide-awake entertain- ment. E. de 8. M. “Life of the Party” Excellent Entertainment. HERE are plenty of reasons for going to see Winnie Lightner in “The Life of the Party,” now being resurrected at the Metropolitan, after its successful debut at the Earle a few weeks ago. In the first place, Lightner-ites will find the lady spaciously humorous, they will find complete mental relaxation through- out, and they will emerge from the theater chuckling over the absurd- ities of the comedy, etc. The laugh element in this film is handled adroitly by Miss Lightner, who—thank her—does not rely en- tirely upon her winking mannerisms. As the greedy and fortunate gold- digger, who steals, wheedles, ca- Jjoles and finally Jands up with an unexpected horse-addict as a hus- band, she is allowed to exploit her entire range of thespianisms—which excel in situations of this caliber. She is helped immeasurably, too, by Charles Butterworth and Charles Judels, who provide moments of even more satisfying mirth. The plot—such as it is—is no more nor less than a gold-digging fable, the outcome being likely to develop a market of this sort of la-, dies, since each of them evokes a millionaire at the end of the shuf- fle. However, although pristine virtue is not flagrantly noticeable throughout, there is a continual flow of amusing nonsensities which are as pure as the driven snow, and quite incapable of arousing the ire of any film-sleuthing Carrie Nation. Heavy ladened as the comedy Is, it does not seem particularly reminiscent of any- thing that has gone before it, Mr. Judels being able to destroy room Thomas H Branch Valley.
