C, LUTHERANS PLAN PLANNING TO MARK NEW CHURCH SITE Corner Stone Laying Tomor- row by St. Paul’s English Lutheran Congregation. ‘The corner stone of the new St. Paul's English Lutheran Church, at Connecticut avenue, Ellicott and Everett streets, will be laid with impressive ceremonies tomorrow at 3 o'clock. A special hymn for the occasion has been written by Harry Tennyson Domer, whose father, Dr. Samuel Domer, was pastor of St. Paul's for over a quarter of a century. The writer of the hymn was born in the parsonage next to the old church, at Eleventh and H streets. Luther W. Linkins, chairman of the Building Committee, will read the list of articles to be placed in the corner St. Paul's Church was founded in 1844. In this day, when many denomi- nations are erecting their “national churches” in Washington, it is inter- esting to go back through the 85 years’ history of St. Paul's Church and find that this was one of the earliest, per- haps the earliest, national church ever organized in Washington. A group of 40 English-speaking Lutherans, splitting | off from the old German Concordia Lutheran Church, and desiring to form a congregation of their own, were ore ganized as a mission by the Maryland Synod. The complete organization was ef- fected by the election of a church coun- cil on Easter Sunday, 1843. The mis- sion was fostered by the national lead- ers of the Lutheran Church and under such patronage it made rapid progress. The national appeal resulted in the erection of a church, the corner stone of which was laid June 12, 1844. Among those taking Mart in the ceremonies was ex-President John Quincy Adams. | Prominent officials of the Government and the Lutheran Church panticipated in the program, the corner stone being laid under national, civic, Lutheran and interdenominational auspices. St. Paul's continued for 30 years as the only rep- | resentative of a national Lutheran body | in the City of Washington. 'fltmnnmfl " Church of Many Na Avostolic. Faith, Chapman, wis T. Anniversary.
