It is stated that some favorable signs can be found, with other indications of a recession in some lines. On the whole, the movement to- ward general betterment is reported to.be still in abeyance. “A week shortened h! election day had not been counted to bring commercial movements o special sig- nificance, and the fundamental aspects of the nnerd situation are essentially unaltered. It is possible to single out some conditions of a more favorable character, but these encouraging indi- cations mainly reflect a response to seasonal influences and do not obscure thé lack of a broad trade revival. No Sharp Turn Seen. “With & wider recognftion now of the far-reaching extent ur the economic transition, there any sudden or sweeping turn for better. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, November 8.—Though it still had a goad volume of forced liquidation to absorb, today’s bond mar- ket managed to hold fairly well, and here and there issues made narrow re- coveries from PFriday’s lows. The weak: ness of stocks, however, prevented any sustained advance. Volume was con- siderably higher than that of Friday forenoon. Bonds with stock conversion or op- tion features reflected the nervousness of stocks. Warner Bros. Pictures 6s, paralleling & similar move in the stock, dropped over 2 points to a new low. Baltimore & Ohio 4';s, New Haven 6s, American 1. G. Chemical 5l2s, Ameri- can International 5!2s, Philadelphia & Reading Coal & lron 6s, Southern Pa- cific 415, American Telephone 4%s and Texas Corporation 5s all were lower. Prime Issues Firm. Hlnh-mde bonds had a firmer tone. Canadian Pacific 4s, Union Pacific M Inland Steel 4158, American Teleglql 51,8 and American & Foreign 58 made substantial gains and other prices in this group were about un- cha 3 Jl?r.ll!tg' rails continued their decline. Chicago & Eastern Illinois 5s, Chicago Great Western 4s, Erie General Lien 4s, Erie 5s, Missouri-Pacific 5'4s and Sea board Airline 6s all sagged. The lasf named is now 4 points below the point at which it stood wl the latest re- organization plan for the road's securi- ties was announced. On the Curb Van Sweringen 6 per cent notes reflected weakness in other Van averlnm n— curities, such as Alleghany 5s, Ch peake Corporation 5s and Nickel Pl.lu 4%s. - Curb Bonds. Industrials were irregular, with gains about balancing losses. ‘The weak feature of the industrials was on the curb bond market, where Cities Service 5 per cent convertible de- bentures mirrored the decline in the complimentary shares. For the first time this bond went below 80, or over 50 points below its recent high and 22 points under the offe level. Foreign dollar issues held very well. German descriptions were steady In ac- tive trading. French, Belgian and Italian bonds made slight gains. South Americans moved narrowly. In the last half hour, with stocks still under sure, some of the losses in the bond list were widened, but the market still gave evidence that buyers were looking for bargains.
