Encouraged by the support given the proposal by the American Federation of Labor at its Boston convention, officers of the National Federation of Federal Employes plan t> resume their activity in behalf of Saturday half-holiday legislation. CRAEMH to grant the holiday is pend- ing in Congress at present. “We be- lieve,” said the American Federation in a resoriiion, made public by the Federal ~@=ployes today, “that the United States # Government should at present, as in the past, take the lead in shortening the hours of labor for those in its employ.” Luther Steward, president of the Na- tional Federation of Federal Employes, and Gertrude M. McNally, secretary- treasurer, attended the Boston meeting, as did John Fitzgerald of New York and John W. Ross ogf Hampton, Va., national vice presidents af the employes’ organization. The raising of Government employ- ment standards generally was advocated by the Boston convention. The Amer- ican Federation urged that the age limit of 45 years for applicants for employ- ment in Government service be raised, and characterized as unfair the em- ployment of naval personnel for repairs and maintenance work in navy yards and_stations, “thus depfl\fin? skilled mechanics and their helpers of the op- portunity for continuous employment.” Ey i Germany now_has 990,000 unsubsi- dized unemployed. THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, KITCHEN IS WIFE’S PRIVATE REALM AND HUSBAND IS RULED OUTSIDE Judge Decides, However, When Time Comes to Wash Dishes Injunction Might Be Suspended. By the Assoclated Press. CHICAGO, October +15.—A few thou- sand American housewives may want to write Judge John J. Sullivan for & copy of yesterday's decision, to be framed and hung over the kitchen door. The kitchen, Judge Sullivan ruled, is the private domain of Mrs. Frances Kosina, and Jacob Kosina is persona ncn grata there. Of course, when the time comes to wash the dishes the injunction against male invasions might be suspended, but during cooking hours the kitchen is to be strictly a gynarchy. ‘The five Kosina children testified they preferred mother's cooking. Father testified he could prove his superiority in cookery by the neighbors. Mother testified that Jacob ed home at noon to evict her from the sacred pre- cincts of her kitchen and wield the skillets himself. Kosina must stay out of the kitchen until October 31. By that time a social worker com- missioned by Judge Sullivan will have sampled meals prepared by Jacob and Frances Kosina and judged which ranks highest in the culinary art. D, . BERLIN, October 15.—One hundred and twenty-six thousand Berlin metal workers, members of the largest trade union group in the world, laid down their arms at 10 o'clock today in protest at the government arbitrator’s award of re- duction in their wages. The reduction was of 8 per cent for workers of above 18 years of age, and 6 per cent for those below that age. ‘The strike creates a menacing snarl in the German economic and political tangle. No one at present ventures to predict what it new and may mean to the nation’s economic | situation, since the metal industry af- fects so many other branches of in- dustry, nor how it may affect politics, in view of the metal workers being among the stanchest of Republicans. Among_the larger plants affected by the walkout were the Allgemeine Elektrizitaets Gesellschaft, Siemens, Bergmann, and the Berlin Metal Works. The walkout of the A. E. G. workers was so complete that ail the company’s plants had to cease operation. Siemens continued operation with a small force, but the Bergmann and Berlin lllllnchl{nenbnu workers were practically all out. et Russia has been the largest market for German agricultural implements this yea mii CRACK . funraniosd to 10 e ROACH DEATH RADIO with the GOLDEN VOICE Every single thing you could ask for is S . ey O = e into the foreground. as you like.
