8 TRADE SHIPS TOTALIS SMALLER Lioyd’s Heglster Shows De- cline in Volume of Building. Sharp declines in the volume of the ‘world's construction of merchant vessels are shown in a statement just issued by Lloyd's Register of Shipping, covering nturns from all maritime countries, cept Russia, for the quarter ended !cwmber 30, last. The total tonnage now in the hands of the shlphufldlng industry is well under the work in hand just before the war period. The world 1 now reported is lower than at any time since September 30, 1928. Merchant shipping under construction at the end of September was shown by the returns to be almost half a million tons less than at the end of June. June total, however, included 156, tons for Russia, so that the net dt e is about 350,000 gross tons, & gr n Gecrease for any quarter than has occurred since the end of the post-war Y’l'wu’dlol:g inflation period, in the U. S. Decline Smaller. great bulk of the decrease during \u quarter, Lloyd's points out, was dlle to the decline in work in Great Britain and Ireland, where 275,000 gross tons less are now in the hands of the shipbuilders than at the end of last June, For the United States the de- cline for the same period was only 25,000 tons. Germany's total decreased 43,000 tons; Denmark’s 18,000 tons, and Japan’s 17,000 tons, while small de- creases were shown for Holland and Sweden. France and Italy were the only countries to show gains, the former country increasing the work in hand 22,000 tons and Italy raising its total 45,000 tons. How the volume of work has compared in the last two quarters is shown by Lioyd’s in the following tables of gross tonage, Russia not being included in the figures for September 30. ited her Countries World Total... . 2,569,036 3,057,735 At present, the returns show, the volume of merchant shipbuilding be- ing constructed in all countries under the supervision of Lloyd's Register and | intended for classification with that society aggregates 1,803,691 gross tons. ‘This total includes 997,401 tons in the hands of the shipbuilders of Great Brit- ain and Ireland and 806,290 tons in the | other maritime countries. Lloyd's, tnmlore, now has under supervision cen.. of the entire merchant of the world and nearly l0 per un of the building in Great Britain and Ireland, compared with 64 m cent of the world's production in previous quarter and 84 per cent of that in Great Britain and Ireland. New Orders Smaller. Again in the last quarter the volume ©of new orders fell far short of replac- ing the work being carried toward com- pletion, the Iaunchings during the representing about 230.000 sross more than the new tonnage which work was begun. Practically thz entire loss fell on Great Britain and mll.nd where launchings were 218,- tons less than the aggregate of new work, as against & launching excess of only about 13,000 tons for the other countries combined. The contrast between the volume of Jaunchings and of replacements in the the last two quarters is shown by Liopd’s in the following gross tonnage 1a ber _ June 30, 1930 t Britain and her countries . World total ... New Work. Great Britain and 227,908 her ‘countries . 343,410 World total ... 570,625 It will be noted that while Great Britain and Jreland launched a greater volume of tonnage than all other coun- tries combined, the new work secured by their shipyards was only about half ©of that gained by the other nations, Tankers in Demand, Demand fér tankers has now reached & point where this type of commercial vessel now represents about 40 per cent of the total world’s ship construction, mough there was a decline of 75,000 tons in the volume of this ton- mn being built at the end of the last as compared with the preceding The returns, which deal with .mm and motor tankers of 1,000 gross tons and upward each, little more than half of the total ton- nage of this type is being built in Great Britain and Ireland, as com- pared with nearly 60 per cent in the previous quarter. This reduction is ac- companied by & decline of 93,000 gross tons in the total being constructed in Great Britain and Ireland, as con- trasted with the volume at the end of June.
